Job summary

Schofield Care Adult Day Health Care in Downtown Buffalo is seeking a dedicated Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant to provide restorative and maintenance modalities under the supervision of a Registered Occupational Therapist. The role supports residents/registrants with individualized therapy plans and progress notes.

Qualifications

  • Education and Training - A graduate of an Occupational Therapy Assistant Program approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association and holding current certification as an Occupational Therapy Assistant with that organization; certified by and currently registered with the New York State Education Department.
  • Experience - A formal or informal experience in a geriatric setting is desirable but not mandatory. The entry-level Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant should have familiarity and understanding of the aging process and current knowledge of geriatric treatment techniques as related to occupational therapy.
  • Character - Must possess good moral character, patience and compassion for the elderly.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out occupational therapy treatment procedures as designated by the Registered Occupational Therapist for specific residents/registrants.
  • Instruct registrants in methods to enable resident/registrant to carry out self-help and other occupational therapy treatment follow-up procedures on a consistent basis.
  • Assist in the construction and fitting of orthotic and assistive devices for specific registrants, as designated by the Registered Occupational Therapist, and instruct registrant regarding their proper use.
  • Assist in ongoing evaluation of assigned registrant's rehabilitation progress.
  • Record observations regarding assigned registrant's treatment response to the Registered Occupational Therapist.
  • Carry out pre-set therapeutic programs for individuals and groups.
  • Recommend termination of functional occupational therapy services by recording progress and suggesting future recourse; ready resident/registrant for discharge by implementing discharge plans.
  • Record, date and sign progress notes into the registrant's record. These must be countersigned by the Registered Occupational Therapist.
  • Assist the Registered Occupational Therapist in the preparation of required reports.
  • Make recommendations and referrals to other programs and/or agencies as indicated with consultation from the Registered Occupational Therapist.
  • Document attendance by tabulating number of registrants names, and times attended, and by posting data according to established procedures.
  • Prepare and verify purchase orders, maintain a current inventory of supplies and equipment, estimate time required to deplete supplies, design and allocate storage space, and determine methods of storage in order to maintain equipment, materials, and supplies of unit.
  • Participate in registrant care conferences with particular regard to those residents/registrants who have been referred for or are potential recipients of occupational therapy services.
  • Participate in inservice training and continuing education by attending conferences, seminars and workshops; participate in facility's inservice education by providing programs which interpret and represent occupational therapy.
  • Participate in other facility meetings as indicated.
  • articipate in coordinating, establishing and administering programs, policies, and procedures, and carry out administrative tasks as assigned.
  • Provide guidance and assistance to other health team personnel regarding use of adaptive equipment, energy conservation techniques, modified self-care techniques, preventive and maintenance techniques for maximal resident/registrant benefit.
  • Supervise and direct support staff.
  • Participate in wheelchair clinic and fabrication of adaptive equipment as needed.
  • Responsible for screening assigned caseload.
  • Complete home visits as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as required by their manager.
