Job Summary and Qualifications

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) performs treatment programs developed by Occupational Therapists, documents treatments, attends team meetings, and participates in continuing education.

Responsibilities include:

  • Implementing treatment programs such as range of motion, strengthening, sensory activities, daily living activities, cognitive and visual-perceptual activities, crafts, leisure activities, group activities, and adaptation of splints and assistive devices.
  • Providing inservices to staff after attending approved continuing education.
  • Completing 3.0 CEUs or 30 contact hours every two years for license renewal, attending mandatory in-services, and maintaining current CPR certification.
  • Maintaining attendance records, charging for patient treatments, ensuring confidentiality, and documenting patient and family education.
  • Communicating effectively with team members, patients, families, and other medical staff; participating in team and department meetings; consulting with physicians and therapists.
  • Performing treatments within specified timeframes, appropriate to patient needs and goals, and documenting progress accurately and timely.
  • Adhering to ethics and compliance standards, including honesty, integrity, and fairness, and attending annual training on the Code of Conduct.
  • Coordinating treatment with team members, securing supplies, and following safety, infection control, and quality policies; maintaining confidentiality and effective communication.
Qualifications:
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) certification within 30 days of employment.
  • Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA).
