Job summary

Mercyhealth in northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin is seeking a certified nursing assistant to provide patient care under RN supervision. You will respond to call lights, document care, and maintain a safe, clean environment while floating to units as needed.

The role requires completing a CNA program and maintaining an active CNA license with CPR or BLS certification within 90 days. The schedule is 24 hours per week, days shift, with comprehensive benefits offered.

OVERVIEW

Provides hands-on patient care including vital signs, blood glucose monitoring, bladder scanning, telemetry, catheter and drain care, and other clinical support under RN supervision. Also assists with call lights, documentation, supplies, maintaining a safe patient environment, floating to units as needed, and training new team members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides patient care as assigned and per routine as defined by educational scope, according to standards of care, shift routines, and policies and procedures.

  • Answers call lights in timely and appropriate manner.

  • Documents care provided according to standards.

  • Maintains a clean work and patient environment.

  • Maintains supplies, including scanning, stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies.

  • Floats to various units based on identified patient care needs.

  • Participates in department or unit performance improvement activities.

  • Training/precepting new partners in collaboration with unit educator.

  • Blood Glucose Monitoring (BGM) with lab personnel

  • Bladder scanning procedure reviewed

  • Bladder scanner training complete (check off sheet for competency)

  • Attaching patient to remote telemetry or bedside cardiac monitor

  • Managing and reporting collection devices:

  • Colostomy, ileostomy or other fecal management systems: care and output measures

  • Indwelling catheters: care and output measures

  • Nasogastric tubes to suction

  • Surgical drains under direction of supervising RN

  • Competent in completing vital signs: Manual process for blood pressure and required reporting of abnormal values to supervising RN

  • Discontinue invasive devices under the direction of the supervising RN:

  • Indwelling (Foley) catheters

  • Nasogastric tubes

  • Peripherally inserted intravenous catheters

  • Similar devices as appropriate

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Completion of a CNA program.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE
  • Current CNA certificate in applicable state.

  • Approved CPR or BLS certification required within 90 days.

While performing the duties of this Job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands to handle, finger, or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 lbs and frequently lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
