Job Summary:
The Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) provides basic nursing care to non-acute and acutely ill residents in a long-term care setting. The role involves assisting residents with daily living activities, monitoring vital signs, maintaining a safe and clean environment, and supporting licensed nurses in patient care. The CNA must demonstrate a caring attitude, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and sound judgment in emergency situations.
Responsibilities:
- Assist residents with activities of daily living including bathing, oral hygiene, dressing, and feeding.
- Monitor and record vital signs such as temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure, blood sugar, pulse oximetry, and intake-output measurements.
- Collect and transport specimens to appropriate departments.
- Observe and document resident condition and report any changes or unusual incidents to licensed nurses.
- Provide bedside care including positioning, lifting, turning, and assisting with toileting and ambulation.
- Respond promptly to call lights and make rounds to assigned residents.
- Maintain cleanliness and order in resident rooms and nursing areas, including changing bed linens and cleaning equipment.
- Assist licensed nurses with resident transport preparation and provide 1:1 care when indicated for safety.
- Manage supply distribution, ordering, and waste disposal according to policies.
- Perform unit-specific duties such as obtaining 12-lead ECGs, telemetry monitoring, and cross-training in various hospital departments.
- Serve as preceptor for new CNA staff and students and participate in performance improvement projects.
Required Skills & Certifications:
- Current full, unrestricted Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license in the state of Alaska.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Ability to safely lift and assist non-ambulatory patients regularly.
- Strong observational and documentation skills.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:
- One year of prior CNA experience preferred.
- Training or certification in point-of-care testing or waived testing.
- Experience with telemetry monitoring and ECG acquisition.
- Cross-training in emergency, labor & delivery, or surgical departments.
Special Considerations:
- Must submit two fingerprint cards upon acceptance.
- Position covered under the Indian Child Protection Act.
- Ability to work calmly under pressure and make sound judgments in emergencies.
- Physical demands include frequent lifting and assisting of patients.
- May be required to perform 1:1 patient sitting for safety.
Scheduling:
- Work schedule and shifts will be assigned based on unit needs.
- May include cross-training and coverage for various hospital departments.
