Unit Descriptions:
Cardiac Care Unit
The Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) is a 44-bed acuity adaptable unit that cares for all patients admitted to Lurie Children's with a primary cardiac diagnosis. Patients range in acuity from stable to critically ill requiring full ICU care and in age from newborn to adulthood. Additionally, we have 6 overflow beds that are managed and staffed by the CCU team. Nursing assistants work closely with the bedside nurses and charge nurse team to provide both patient care and necessary support on the unit. Key responsibilities of our nursing assistant team include: ensuring each patient room is appropriately stocked, acquiring appropriate equipment for patient care or procedures, stripping rooms after discharge and setting up for admissions, responding to emergencies and ensuring life-saving equipment is brought to the bedside in a timely manner. Patient care responsibilities include assisting with bathing, weights, feeding infants and young children, obtaining vital signs, EKGs, assisting with patient transports and 1:1 sitting,
Key Qualities: Must be comfortable with a significant number of duties being non-patient care and serving in a support role to the charge and bedside RNs (ensuring unit is stocked, rooms set up and stripped appropriately, obtaining needed equipment in a timely manner, respond to ECPR activations by bringing critical life support equipment to the bedside in the CCU or any unit that has an ECPR activation.) Patient care responsibilities include interacting with and assisting with ADLs in young children, assisting with care for adult size patients, feeding and comforting infants, 1:1 sitting and patient transport.
General Medicine/Pulmonology
This 48-bed acute medical unit delivers exceptional, family-centered care to patients from birth through young adulthood. We specialize in a broad range of pulmonary, general medical, and mental health needs. Common respiratory diagnoses include asthma, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, and cystic fibrosis. General medical care often involves fever in neonates or of unknown origin, cellulitis, and medically complex patients with chronic conditions. We also support patients with co-occurring or primary mental health diagnoses, recognizing the importance of integrated emotional and behavioral health care. Our team works alongside an extensive multidisciplinary group to deliver individualized, compassionate care. We are deeply committed to clinical excellence, teamwork, and supporting the physical, emotional, and psychological well-being of every patient and family we serve.

Pediatric Medical/Surgical/Transplant
Floor 20 is a 48-bed medical/surgical unit. Our primary services are: Pediatric Surgery, Trauma, GI/Liver, Kidney, ENT, Plastics and Urology. Within these services, we see medical and surgical patients. Medical patients often transition to surgical, and once some of the surgical patients are past the post-op period, they transition back to medical services.

Hematology/Oncology
48 bed unit, where we serve primarily hematology/oncology patients, in addition to an overflow of all patients admitted to LCH. We are also the primary unit to care for patients with eating disorders in which an NA might be assigned as a 1:1 sitter. Nursing assistants work closely with nurses to help provide care for the patients and support on the unit. Responsibilities of the nursing assistant include vital signs, weights, bathing, POCT, setting up for admissions, discharges, stocking, assisting with patient transports, 1:1 sitting.
Key Qualities:
Comfortable sitting 1:1 with patients with eating disorders or challenging behaviors. Respectful communication, teamwork, patience and flexibility are important qualities that we look for in our nursing assistants.
Certified Nurse Assistant Job Description:
The Nursing Assistant (NA) works under the direction of a Registered Nurse to provide care for patients/families with acute and chronic diseases and disorders found in the pediatric and adolescent into the young adult populations. Actively supports the hospital’s and the department’s quality goals and service excellence principles.
Essential Job Functions:
Direct patient care-- Assists with the following tasks under the direction of an RN:
- Orienting families to the ambulatory clinic area
- Vital signs measurement per department standard
- Documentation of patient data per department standard either on paper record or in EMR
- Emptying fluid collection containers
- Point of care testing/controls glucose, hemocult, urine dipstick, hemoglobin A1C, HCG testing
- PO feeding
- Bulb suctioning
- Assisting with procedures
- Assisting with intra hospital transport
- Holding patients
- Providing comfort measures
- Performs ECGs and bladder scan
- Communicate and interact with patients & families to foster a therapeutic and collaborative relationship
- Intervene in anticipated emergency situations and know emergency protocols
1:1 Observation
- Maintain a safe environment for the patient, family, and staff through 1:1 continuous monitoring (remaining at arm’s length and facing the patient at all times including during bathroom and shower activities) and additional activities as assigned
- Maintain age/developmentally appropriate patient interaction in a therapeutic manner focusing on behavioral monitoring and de-escalation interventions
- Perform components of general care needs (eating, hydration, and/or elimination) if/when needed.
- Monitor patients for changes in behavior and communicate to appropriate staff (nurse, physician, nursing/medical assistants, etc.)
- Actively reinforce goals and parameters set by the care team which may include age/developmentally appropriate goals, expectations and behavioral limits
- Respond appropriately and promptly to direction given by nursing or other clinical staff
- Participate in hand off (from patient safety associate to patient safety associate at change of shift or to other team members) and communicates any special care considerations, care priorities or support needs
- Documents care delivered/patient responses to interventions in the Electronic Health Record (EHR) while utilizing the behavioral support guidelines
Stocking and maintenance:
- Distributing linen
- Clean rooms after discharge
- Replacing canisters, oxygen tubing, and nebulizers per protocol
- Obtaining unit supplies
- Returning unused supplies/equipment from patient room and treatment room to central area designated by unit
- Stocking patient carts
Clerical:
- Assisting with sending labs
- Phone calling/paging as directed
- Coverage for clerk
Cleaning:
- Keeping unit orderly
- Cleaning equipment and toys
- Checking and recording refrigerator and blanket warmer temperatures
- Checking and recording of AED checks
Assists in the retrieval and delivery of medications and pharmaceutical products that are dispensed from the Pharmacy to the appropriate patient care provider/s in a timely manner
Other Job Functions As Assigned.
Compliance
- Practice proper safety techniques in compliance with hospital/departmental policies & procedures. Report employee/patient/visitor injuries or accidents (and other safety issues) to supervisor.
- Supports clinical operations and decisions related to treatment plans. Responds to environmental concerns (maintenance/cleanliness) of the area.
- Participates in staff meetings as scheduled.
- Consistently adheres to scheduling requirements.
- Maintain patient rights, including privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information as well as patient privacy & integrity.
- Comply with all related policies accompanying the patient safety associate role.
- Demonstrates ongoing competency of the job (initial training, on-going education and age-related/cultural competencies).
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- High school diploma/GED, plus completion of program to certification as Nursing Assistant or Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Must be able to safely immobilize children, if necessary, and be able to move equipment and patients;
- Respond quickly to patient care situations; effectively communicate with patients/families, physicians, and patient care staff, and meet professional image and communication standards.
- Bilingual ability preferred.
- Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association.

Pay Range
$18.50-$27.75 Hourly
