ResponsibilitiesMidwifery practice by certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) includes a comprehensive range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause.
- Assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health, prevent disease, and manage care for adolescent and adult females, focusing on family planning, preconception care, pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, gynecological needs, and newborn care during the first two days of life.
- CNMs may not admit patients to the hospital but can write admission orders after consulting with a physician.
- Provide initial and ongoing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Conduct physical examinations, prescribe medications (including controlled substances and contraceptives), order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, and utilize medical devices.
- Include health promotion, disease prevention, and personalized wellness education and counseling in midwifery care.
- Complete patient history and physical examinations, documenting according to regulatory requirements and organizational policies.
- Perform rounds on hospitalized patients and see patients in outpatient settings.
- Evaluate labor complaints at term with uncomplicated pregnancies.
- Perform ongoing and reassessments appropriate to patient status.
- Identify patient care needs based on assessment data.
- Develop differential diagnoses and update diagnoses based on new assessment data, especially in complex acute, critical, or chronic conditions.
- Order medications legally, including controlled substances with DEA & CAPA-CS credentials.
- Monitor and document patient responses to treatments and medications.
- Synthesize information from various sources to make clinical management decisions, including consultations and referrals.
- Provide education to patients and families.
- Offer expert consultation within scope of practice.
- Request specialist consultations and make appropriate referrals.
- Document care and treatments thoroughly and promptly in patient records.
- Foster a team-oriented environment through professional communication.
- Deliver individualized education to patients and families, applying learning principles and creating an effective teaching environment.
- Recognize teaching opportunities, providing age-specific and culturally sensitive education to promote safe patient care and awareness of the CNM role.
- Collaborate with patients to evaluate outcomes based on the care plan, responses to interventions, standards of practice, and expected outcomes.
QualificationsRequired:
- Current Indiana RN license
- Current Indiana CNM license/certification
- Completion of a formal graduate-level education program
- Current ACLS and NRP or NALS certification
- DEA & CSR certification
- Collaborative practice agreement for controlled substances (CAPA-CS)
