Responsibilities
Midwifery as practiced by certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) and certified midwives (CMs) encompasses a full range of primary health care services for women from adolescence beyond menopause.
- Assess, diagnose, monitor, promote health and protection from disease, and manage care for adolescent and adult females focusing on family planning services, preconception care, pregnancy, childbirth, the post-partum period, gynecological needs, and the care of the well newborn (during the first two days of life).
- CNMs may not admit patients to the hospital but may write admission orders after consultation with the physician.
- Provide initial and ongoing comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
- Conduct physical examinations, prescribe medications including controlled substances and contraceptive methods, and order and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests and the use of medical devices.
- Include health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling in midwifery care.
- Complete patient-appropriate history and physical exams and document according to regulatory requirements and NHC/NKDH policies.
- Make rounds on hospitalized patients and see patients in the office setting.
- Evaluate complaints of labor at term with an uncomplicated pregnancy.
- Perform ongoing physical assessments appropriate to patient status.
- Perform reassessments as needed based on patient status.
- Identify patient care needs based on assessment data.
- Develop differential diagnoses based on assessment data and identified needs.
- Reformulate diagnoses based on new or additional assessment data, considering the dynamic nature of complex acute, critical, and chronic illnesses.
- Order medications according to law and regulations (controlled substances require DEA & CAPA-CS).
- Evaluate and document patient responses to medications and treatments appropriately.
- Synthesize data from various sources to make clinical decisions regarding management, consultation, or referral.
- Provide patient and family education.
- Offer consultation based on knowledge and expertise within scope of practice.
- Request consults and make referrals as appropriate.
- Document care and treatment thoroughly and promptly in the patient record.
- Foster a cooperative team environment through professional communication.
- Provide individualized patient and family education, applying principles of learning, actively involving the learner, and creating a conducive environment for teaching/learning.
- Recognize teaching opportunities and deliver age-specific and culturally sensitive education to promote safe patient care regarding the role of the CNM.
- In collaboration with the patient, evaluate outcomes identified in the CNM plan of care by comparing patient responses to interventions, current practice standards, and expected outcomes.
Qualifications
Required:
- Current Indiana RN license
- Current Indiana CNM License/Certification
- Completion of a formal graduate-level education program
- Current ACLS and NRP or NALS Certification
- DEA & CSR Certification
- Collaborative practice agreement - controlled substances (CAPA-CS)
