Job Description

The VITAS Home Health Aide (HHA) is a non-exempt employee trained to provide personal care and services to hospice patients, augmenting care given by family members or other caregivers.

Assigned Job Responsibilities

Performs only those personal care activities contained in a written assignment. Assignments may include:

• Helping patients maintain good personal hygiene.
• Planning and preparing meals; assisting with feeding when needed.
• Assisting with patient ambulation.
• Assisting with treatments ordered by a physician, supervised by a nurse (e.g., colostomy care, use of walker or wheelchair, dressing reinforcement, range of motion exercises, medication assistance).
• Reading and recording temperature, pulse, and respiration.

Other Responsibilities

May include:

• Maintaining a safe and healthy environment.
• Promoting mental alertness through engagement.
• Providing emotional support.
• Reporting changes in patient condition.
• Teaching basic personal care to caregivers.
• Practicing infection control.
• Observing, documenting patient status and care provided.
• Completing at least 12 hours of in-service training annually.
• Performing other tasks as assigned.

Restrictions

The HHA may not:

• Be assigned to institutional settings.
• Change sterile dressings or irrigate body cavities.
• Perform gastric lavage, catheterize, or administer medications.
• Care for tracheotomy tubes or suction patients.
• Provide unassigned personal care.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
• Meets personnel qualifications per 42 C.F.R. regulations.
• 75 hours of training documented as per regulations.
• Successfully completed a Competency Evaluation program.

Training/Certification

States and certifications vary; see detailed list in original description.

Special Requirements

• Ability to read, write, and follow directions.
• Ability to travel as needed.
• Availability of a telephone in the home.

Physical Demands

Requires lifting, standing, walking, and visual acuity. Accommodations may be made for disabilities.

Reporting

• Reports directly to the VITAS Nurse.
• Receives clinical direction from the VITAS Nurse.
