Job summary

Virginia Commonwealth University Health Systems is seeking a Certified Medical Assistant to provide direct patient care under physician supervision. The ideal candidate will have a current Medical Assistant Certification and strong organizational and communication skills. This role requires flexibility to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays, in a fast-paced environment.

Qualifications

  • Current Medical Assistant Certification from a recognized association required.
  • AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent necessary.
  • One year of medical assistant work experience required unless a graduate of a medical assistant program.

Responsibilities

  • Provides direct, age-specific care to patients under physician direction.
  • Functions under supervision, providing patient care and emotional support.
  • Handles medications and supplies as needed.

Job description

The Certified Medical Assistant provides direct, age-specific care to a patient or group of patients based on medical orders and the plan of care under the direction of the physician.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire:

Current Medical Assistant Certification through a recognized national professional association such as the American Association of Medical Assistants, the American Medical Technologists, The National Association of Healthcare Professions, the American Registry of Medical Assistants, or the National Healthcare Association.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment:

Same as above.

Additional Certifications:

AHA BLS HCP Certification or equivalent.

Experience REQUIRED:
  • One (1) year of medical assistant work experience within the last three (3) years if not a graduate of a medical assistant program.
  • No work experience required if a graduate of a medical assistant program.
  • Previous experience using a personal computer and various software applications, including Microsoft, e-mail, etc.
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, problem solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
Experience PREFERRED:
  • Two (2) to three (3) years of previous experience as a Certified Medical Assistant.
  • Previous experience in an academic health care environment.
Education/training REQUIRED:

High School Diploma or equivalent.

Education/training PREFERRED:

Graduation from an accredited Medical Assisting training program such as CAAHEP or ABHES.

Independent actions:

Functions under supervision, providing patient care, emotional support, and problem solving in accordance with policies. Requires prior approval for schedule changes, legal issues, or care deviations. May involve handling medications and supplies.

Supervisory responsibilities:

N/A

Additional position requirements:

Work all shifts, including weekends and holidays, with schedules established with your Nurse or Practice Manager. Schedules may be adjusted as needed.

  • Lifting 20-50 lbs.
  • Prolonged standing, sitting, bending, walking, climbing, reaching.
Mental/Sensory:

Recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, logical thinking.

Ability to handle a fast-paced environment, multiple priorities, and frequent changes.
