Job description

Job Summary: Geisinger offers outpatient Certified Medical Assistants up to a $3,000 bonus for eligible candidates. Geisinger has hundreds of community sites that allow Medical Assistants to work in a progressive learning environment while providing top-notch care in an outpatient clinical setting. Graduate of an accredited 1-year certificate or 2-year diploma Medical Assistant program preferred. Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) required. Certification by one of the listed governing associations (NHA, AMT, AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, AAH, or AMCA) required.

Job Duties

1. Obtain and document patient information including reason for visit, weight, vital signs, medication review, and screening information using the electronic medical record.
2. Set up examination and treatment rooms between patients.
3. Assist patients in preparing for visits, ensuring safety and privacy.
4. Provide direct patient care as directed by the provider, such as EKGs, wound dressings, and support during minor procedures.
5. Prepare and administer medications according to policy after demonstrating competency; intravenous medications may not be administered.
6. Complete tests and treatments per provider’s orders after competency validation.
7. Collect and prepare laboratory specimens and complete related paperwork efficiently.
8. Perform phlebotomy and assist with laboratory functions as overseen by the laboratory.
9. Support clinic operations with receptionist and clerical duties, including managing reports and documentation in medical records.
10. Document thoroughly to create accurate medical records.
11. Utilize electronic medical records and scheduling systems as designated.
12. Facilitate timely patient appointments, complete referrals, and pre-authorizations.
13. Collect co-payments.
14. Assist with orientation of new personnel under provider or site lead supervision.
15. Manage ongoing patient communication, respond to inquiries, and prioritize provider communications.
16. Reinforce patient education as directed by the provider.
17. Inventory supplies and pharmaceuticals, verify expiration dates, and document utilization.
18. Transport non-controlled medications as necessary.
19. Prepare and clean instruments, following sterilization protocols.
20. Maintain infection prevention standards in room setup and cleaning.
21. Inspect diagnostic equipment regularly and report maintenance needs.
22. Participate actively in patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Work is typically performed in a clinical environment; travel may be required. All job-specific obligations and organizational policies must be followed. Additional department-specific competencies may be required.
