Job description

Responsibilities

Virginia Mason Medical Center has been recognized among the Best Hospitals in Washington state by U.S. News & World Report.

The Medical Assistant assists physicians with clinical duties, including taking patient histories, administering injections, assisting in examinations and procedures, and performing laboratory and radiological examinations.

  1. Coordinate and schedule services for patients and providers, maintain provider’s daily schedules, and communicate changes.
  2. Prepare charts with all necessary paperwork, coordinate pre-authorizations, and request/submits referrals.
  3. Maintain filing of test results and update insurance information.
  4. Manage information such as filing, pharmacy refill lines, release/receipt of records, x-rays, referrals, pre-authorizations, and quality checks on charge slips.
  5. Provide patients with preoperative and postoperative information.
  6. Act as the primary contact for patients, answer telephones, schedule appointments, and remind patients of upcoming visits.
  7. Explain logistics related to appointments and keep patients informed of delays.
  8. Perform telephone and in-person screening.
  9. Manage office supplies, coordinate durable medical equipment delivery/return, and maintain stock and patient education materials.
  10. Facilitate patient flow and rooming by taking medical histories, vital signs, and obtaining last visit notes and lab results.
  11. Prepare patients for exams, treatments, and procedures, including obtaining vital signs and explaining tests or procedures.
  12. Observe and record patient symptoms, instruct on specimen collection, and perform specimen collection for microbiology testing.
  13. Screen and follow up on test results, maintain medication and immunization records, and administer eye drops, vaccines, and perform waived tests like glucose or urine dipstick.
  14. Perform venipuncture, injections, respiratory tests, medication administration, and assist with sterile procedures and minor surgeries.
  15. Utilize Standard Precautions, clean and organize exam rooms, sterilize equipment, and dispose of bio-hazardous materials.
Qualifications

We require:

  • Graduation from an accredited Medical Assisting program and Washington State Department of Health Medical Assistant - Certified (CM) credential.
  • Knowledge of third-party payer requirements.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills, along with PC proficiency.
  • One year of Medical Assistant – Certified experience preferred.
