The Medical Assistant will manage customer flow throughout the clinic and assist providers in managing and treating patients. Patients come from diverse backgrounds and age groups, requiring individualized care, including infants, children, adolescents, adults, or geriatrics. Tasks and competencies are specific to the roles of the Supervising Nurse and Supervising Provider, as outlined by the Minnesota Board of Nursing and the Minnesota Board of Medical Practice. The Medical Assistant collaborates with the Clinic Supervisor, Clinic Manager, and Providers to meet organizational goals. Effective communication with the healthcare team regarding patient progress, concerns, and questions is essential.

Clinical Care

The Medical Assistant performs clinical and clerical tasks to support patient flow, including rooming patients, administering immunizations, injections, and medications as directed, and collecting laboratory specimens. Depending on the clinic specialty and location, additional duties may include:

  • Providing telephone support
  • Facilitating communication between patients and providers
  • Assisting with prescription refills
  • Performing x-ray duties (if certified)
  • Performing phlebotomy
  • Conducting laboratory tests
Clinic Support

The Medical Assistant may also support clinic operations by:

  • Front desk/check-in support
  • Ordering and stocking supplies
  • Assisting with prior authorizations
Other Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate proficiency in skills outlined in the NMH Medical Assistant scope of Practice
  • Maintain and upgrade skills as required and defined by Blaze Health
  • Accept other duties to promote organizational goals
  • Follow directions from physicians, providers, nurses, and managers
Compliance
  • Adhere to the Code of Conduct and privacy standards
  • Report violations or concerns appropriately
  • Comply with legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements

Education & Experience Requirements
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Graduate of an accredited Medical Assistant program
  • Medical Assistant certification (required)
  • Previous clinical experience (required)
  • Willingness to pass or possess an x-ray operator’s license
Knowledge, Skills, and Licenses
  • Ability to prioritize tasks efficiently
  • Proficiency in computer applications
  • Current BLS certification
  • State license in Minnesota
