  • Alternative military medical training programs may qualify.
  • Registration/ certification requirements: CMA (AAMA) or equivalent.

Job description


  • Perform clinical, technical, administrative, and clerical duties under physician, APRN, or PA direction

  • Conduct point-of-care testing and report critical lab values to the physician

  • Prepare patients, examination rooms, treatment rooms, supplies, and equipment

  • Obtain and document chief complaints, medications, vital signs, pain screening, and allergies

  • Pend physician orders and assist with examinations, tests, procedures, and office-based surgery

  • Apply splints, casts, and dressings and remove sutures after competency is established

  • Report and assist during emergencies

  • Prepare and administer ordered medications and immunizations after demonstrating competency and passing the medication administration test

  • Receive and return clinically related telephone calls after consulting with the physician or registered nurse

  • Teach patients and provide printed information about diagnosis, self-care, health promotion, disease prevention, and community healthcare resources

  • Document patient education, data, and care in the medical record

  • Complete medical insurance and related forms for physician review

  • Communicate with patients, referral sources, and payors between visits

  • Complete registration, scheduling, billing, pre-authorization, and other office duties

  • Schedule physician-ordered tests and treatments

  • Perform other assigned duties


Requirements


  • Completion of a qualifying medical assistant training program in South Carolina, including an accredited CAAHEP/ABHES or U.S. Department of Education-recognized program

  • Alternatively, completion of an approved South Carolina Career and Technical Education Health Sciences Program

  • Alternatively, completion of a medical assisting program provided by a U.S. military branch

  • Alternatively, completion of a U.S. Department of Labor-approved Registered Apprenticeship program

  • Alternatively, completion of an employer-led training program aligned with a nationally accredited certification exam

  • Alternatively, completion of the Prisma Health Certification Institute Fast Track Certified Medical Assistant program

  • Tennessee candidates: completion of an accredited medical assistant program preferred

  • No experience required

  • Current job-related certification: CMA (AAMA), RMA (AMT), CCMA (NHA), NCMA (NCCT), RMA (ARMA), NRCMA (NAHP), or RMA (AAMP)

  • Must perform duties within the scope of training and certification

  • Must demonstrate competency and pass the medication administration test before administering medications and immunizations

  • CMAs certified before 1/1/2020 who maintained certification without lapse are exempt from the education requirements

  • Current South Carolina incumbents hired after 1/1/2020 without the stated education have until July 15, 2026, to complete the required state education requirements
