The City of Midwest City is hiring a Certified Equipment Operator I in the Line Maintenance Department. The role involves operating trucks, tractors, mowers, dump trucks, and various equipment to install, repair, and maintain water distribution and wastewater systems.

You will work with a Crew Leader and perform preventive maintenance, repairs, and emergency tasks. Required are a high school diploma or GED, a valid OK driver’s license, and a Class B CDL with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsements,

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and be insurable.
  • Must possess and maintain an OK Commercial Class "B" driver’s license with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsement and ODEQ Class "D" water and wastewater certifications.
  • Must be at least 18 years old.

Responsibilities

  • Operate equipment such as trucks, tractors and mowers, dump trucks, excavation equipment and motorized rodder machinery.
  • Assist a Crew Leader in installation and repair of water and sewer lines, meters and hydrants.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs; assist with emergency repairs of water and sewer lines.
  • Load materials and operate heavy equipment to support street and utility projects.
  • Read blueprints and city water/sewer atlas for planning and repairs.

The City of Midwest City is accepting applications for the position of Certified Equipment Operator I in the Line Maintenance Department.

What You’ll Do

In this role, you will operate equipment such as trucks, tractors and mowers, dump trucks, excavation equipment and motorized rodder machinery and uses a variety of power and hand tools in the installation, repair and maintenance of City owned water distribution system and waste water collection system and other public property.

Primary responsibilities include:
  • Checks equipment thoroughly before use and performs minor repairs in the field as needed. Takes equipment to Fleet Maintenance for servicing.
  • Assists a Crew Leader in the installation and repair of water and sewer lines, manholes, water meters and fire hydrants.
  • Trims or cuts down trees on right-of-way which are blocking access and damaging the collection or distribution systems. Hauls away brush resulting from clearance work.
  • Corrects sewer stop-ups with the use of motorized rodder/flusher and repairs or replaces any damaged line.
  • Performs preventive maintenance by rodding sewer lines.
  • Makes taps in sewer lines with tapping machine to allow new hook-ups.
  • Assists with clean-up in the event of damage from a sewer stop-up at a home or business. Including but not limited to removal of waste debris, water extractor's for carpeted flooring, applies deodorizers and other chemicals as needed.
  • Loads gravel, sand and other materials into 2-ton dump truck using front-end loader, drives truck to job site and unloads at designated location.
  • Breaks up concrete with jackhammer and loads on 2-ton dump truck with backhoe.
  • Makes taps in water lines with tapping machine to allow new hook-ups, installs service line and sets water meter and meter components.
  • Installs, replaces and rebuilds fire hydrants to fulfill Fire Department requirements.
  • Knowledge of proper placement of barricades during road projects and around disaster sites, and, when necessary, directs traffic.
  • Responds to emergency distribution line failures and sewage blockages or overflows, notifies residents/business of outage, and performs the necessary repairs to lines.
  • Paints fire hydrants, operates and marks distribution valves.
  • Must be able to read, interrupt and explain blue prints, as-built and City provided water and sewer atlas from both electronic and paper formats.
  • Evaluates and determines responsibility of repair in relation to water leaks and sewer lines, repairs City owned infrastructure. Makes written reports of findings.
  • Complies with established safety policies and procedures.
  • Perform any other related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Must possess high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Oklahoma driver's license and be insurable
  • Must possess and maintain an OK Commercial Class "B" driver's license with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsement and ODEQ Class "D" water and wastewater certifications
  • Must be at least 18 years old
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience in the water and wastewater field preferred
  • Excavation equipment, including backhoe or track hoe and shoring equipment is desired
Certification Requirements

Must possess and maintain an OK Commercial Class "B" driver's license with Air Brakes and Tanker endorsement and ODEQ Class "D" water and wastewater certifications

Other Significant Facts
  • Employee is on 24-hour call.
  • The employee is required to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must be able to set up and take down sound system unassisted.
  • Must be able to work in cold weather.
  • Must be able to lift and bend.
  • Must be able to operate a cell phone in a clear, concise manner.
  • May be required to operate a golf cart (must be 18 years old and insurable to operate a golf cart).
