Job Summary

The Certified Electrician is responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and safe operation of electrical systems and equipment throughout the Wilberforce University campus. The position supports academic buildings, administrative offices, residence halls, athletic facilities, and other University properties. The Certified Electrician performs preventive and corrective maintenance, responds to electrical emergencies, completes work orders, and ensures electrical work is performed safely and in accordance with applicable electrical codes, regulations, manufacturer specifications, and University policies. The position is part of the Facilities Management team and coordinates with outside electrical contractors when specialized services or projects are required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and replace electrical systems, equipment, fixtures, wiring, circuits, switches, outlets, panels, breakers, and related components.
• Inspect electrical systems and equipment to identify potential safety hazards, deficiencies, or needed repairs.
• Diagnose electrical problems and determine appropriate corrective actions.
• Perform preventive maintenance on electrical systems and equipment throughout the University campus.
• Install and maintain interior and exterior lighting systems, including emergency and security lighting.
• Maintain electrical systems serving classrooms, offices, residence halls, athletic facilities, common areas, mechanical spaces, and other University buildings.
• Repair and replace electrical outlets, switches, fixtures, breakers, ballasts, wiring, and related components.
• Maintain and troubleshoot electrical panels, distribution systems, and related equipment.
• Respond promptly to electrical emergencies, power outages, electrical failures, and other conditions that may present a safety or property risk.
• Use appropriate testing equipment to diagnose electrical problems and verify proper operation.
• Ensure electrical work complies with applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, regulations, and University standards.
• Coordinate with outside electrical contractors and service providers when work requires specialized expertise or equipment.
• Monitor contractor work to ensure that services are completed properly and in accordance with University requirements.
• Assist with emergency preparedness and response activities involving electrical systems and power interruptions.
• Follow all University safety policies and use appropriate personal protective equipment.
• Submit and respond to work orders in a timely manner.
• Communicate professionally with faculty, staff, students, contractors, and visitors while performing work.
• Assist other Facilities Management personnel with general maintenance duties as needed.
• Participate in after-hours, weekend, holiday, or on-call assignments as required by University operations.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Facilities or designee.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Current electrician certification or license appropriate for the work being performed and required by applicable Ohio law.
• Minimum of 3 years of professional electrical experience, preferably in a commercial, institutional, industrial, or higher education environment.
• Demonstrated experience installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems.
• Valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record required.
• Ability to pass required background and employment screening.

Preferred Qualifications

• Journeyman Electrician license or higher-level electrical credential.
• Experience working in a university, college, school, hospital, commercial, or other institutional environment.
• Experience with electrical distribution systems and commercial electrical equipment.
• Experience with preventive maintenance programs and computerized work-order systems.
• Experience with emergency power systems, generators, transfer switches, and emergency lighting.
• Knowledge of energy-efficient lighting and electrical systems.
• Experience supervising or coordinating electrical contractors.

Physical Requirements

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation. The position requires frequent standing, walking, bending, kneeling, climbing, reaching, and working in confined or difficult-to-access areas. The employee may be required to climb ladders, work from elevated platforms, lift and carry tools and equipment, and work in varying temperatures and conditions.

Work Environment

Work is performed throughout the University campus, including academic buildings, administrative offices, residence halls, athletic facilities, mechanical rooms, and outdoor areas.The position may involve exposure to electrical hazards, construction areas, dust, noise, varying temperatures, and other conditions commonly associated with electrical and facilities maintenance work. The position may require evening, weekend, holiday, emergency, and on-call work based on University needs.
