Job Summary: As a member of the Child Life Team, you will plan, develop, and provide Child Life programming for a specific clinical area to address the psychosocial, emotional, and developmental needs of pediatric patients and their families. Using age-appropriate play, Certified Child Life Specialists (CCLS) consider the issues children face in healthcare settings and assess patient needs related to growth, education, preparation, medical play, and coping strategies, among others. CCLS is responsible for delivering child life interventions within Geisinger's policies and procedures, meeting qualifications outlined by the Association of Child Life Professionals, and maintaining professional certification through ongoing education.
Job Duties include evaluating child's developmental stage, developing strategies to reduce fear and anxiety, implementing specialized services such as medical play and procedure preparation, educating families and staff, leading coping strategies during procedures, and documenting interventions. The role also involves creating and maintaining a safe play environment, supervising volunteers, and providing consultation to healthcare staff on developmental and behavioral issues.

Requirements include completing a Child Life Internship (minimum 600 hours), holding a bachelor's degree in Child Development, Education, or Psychology, and being eligible for certification by the Association of Child Life Professionals. Membership and certification maintenance fees are covered by the department. The department also offers an ACLP-accredited internship and supervises practicum students.

Educational Requirements: Bachelor's Degree in Child Development (Required). Experience: Minimum of 1 year related work experience (Preferred). Certification: Certified Child Life Specialist within 6 months, through the Association of Child Life Professionals.
