Job summary

City of Houston is seeking a journeyman-level inspector to ensure construction compliance with local and national codes across mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural trades. You will assess plans and field work, issue notices of violation, and maintain detailed inspection records while engaging with the public and contractors.

The role requires journey-level expertise and official trade certificates, with workplace safety and periodic drug testing.

Qualifications

• Requires High School Diploma or GED and up to 18 months of education or training in the area of inspection.
• Two (2) years of journey level or skilled experience related to the area of inspection to be performed are required.

Responsibilities

• Inspects mechanical, electrical, plumbing, or structural systems to ensure compliance with building codes and local ordinances; provides written feedback on findings.
• Maintains daily logs, records photographs, and issues violation notices and stop-work orders under supervision.
• Monitors construction sites to ensure compliance with codes and coordinates with public, contractors and professionals to resolve inquiries.
• Researches and evaluates plans, specifications, and drawings; prepares technical reports.

Education

High School Diploma or GED

Plumbing - licensed by the State Board of Plumbing Examiners; ICBO/IAPMO Plumbing Inspector Certificate

Electrical - ICBO or IAEA Inspector's Certificate

Mechanical - ICBO Mechanical Inspector's Certificate

Structural - ICBO Building Inspector's Certificate

Occupancy - ICBO Certificate in the primary area of inspection

Elevator - QEI Elevator Inspector Certificate
