Job summary

General Motors seeks a Group Manager for Cell Systems Research & Modeling to lead strategy and execution across experimental characterization, physics-based and empirical modeling, and AI/ML applications to experiments and analysis.

The role requires deep electrochemistry knowledge, battery materials, data science, and exemplary leadership in a matrix organization, collaborating across R&D, engineering, vehicle and energy-storage programs and suppliers.

Qualifications

• PhD in materials/chemistry/chemical engineering or related field.
• 15+ years in battery cell characterization, electrochemistry, diagnostics, physics-based modeling, AI/ML analytics or related areas.
• 10+ years leading people and major technical programs in a matrix organization.

Responsibilities

• Set strategy, priorities, resources, and roadmap for cell characterization and modeling across formats.
• Build and lead a multidisciplinary team focusing on accountability and continuous learning.
• Lead cross-functional teams across characterization, modeling, design, materials, safety, manufacturing, engineering, and programs.
• Build trusted partnerships and communicate technical conclusions clearly to leaders and suppliers.
• Develop capabilities for cell performance testing, three-electrode methods, diagnostics, impedance, and failure analysis.
• Lead development and application of electrochemical, thermal, mechanical, transport, and degradation models.
• Define material parameters and data needs for modeling and AI/ML integration.
• Establish rigorous parameterization, calibration, validation, uncertainty assessment, data curation, and responsible AI/ML practices.
• Develop data-driven decision systems to identify informative experiments and accelerate learning.
• Provide actionable technical insight for technology evaluation, supplier assessment, and technology transfer.
