Job summary

State of South Carolina is seeking a full-time highway maintenance worker to support routine roadway and bridge maintenance, operate trucks and equipment, and assist with traffic control in work zones.

The role requires a CDL Class A within six months of placement, and physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs. Training is provided, and the workplace is diverse and nondiscriminatory, with potential extended shifts in inclement weather.

Qualifications

• A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.
• CDL Class A within six months of placement is required.

Responsibilities

• Operates 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
• Operates small equipment such as roller (≤4 tons), snow plow, spreader and brush chipper in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations.
• Performs manual labor in activities related to construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges.
• Assists with placement of traffic control devices to set up maintenance work zones.
• Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
• Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way.
• Operates heavier equipment such as front-end loaders, belt loaders, tractor with ditcher, specialized mowers, trailer-mounted injection patcher and backhoes.
• Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections in accordance with the Department's rules and procedures.
• Operates and maintains power tools and hand tools for highway and bridge maintenance activities.
• Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may require extended hours or 12-hour shifts.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.
