Job Summary
The part‑time CDL Instructor is responsible for instructing backing manoeuvres and hands‑on training to the students of LIT’s Professional Truck Driving Academy.
This position works under moderate supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Implement practical training consisting of primarily range and street training for Class A, Class B, Refresher Course and custom training following established program curriculum.
- Meet with lead instructor to discuss training activities.
- Conduct both day and night truck driving training activities.
- Attend advisory council meetings as necessary.
- Maintain good working relationships with businesses, industries, and the truck driving advisory council.
- Work as a team player at LIT.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum / Preferred Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum three (3) years verifiable 7,000 OTR (over‑road) experience.
- Minimum three (3) years verifiable driver instruction and training experience, including both range and OTR.
- Experience with operation of tractor‑van trailer and bulk tanker desired.
- Experience working with students of different knowledge and skill levels.
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
Education / License
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Must possess and maintain a class A CDL (commercial driver’s license) and at least a tank endorsement.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of and compliance with the most current rules and regulations of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (FMCSR).
- Knowledge of LIT truck driving program’s goals and objectives.
- Knowledge of LIT policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of industry‑accepted training techniques.
- Ability to work flexible hours.
- Ability to demonstrate exemplary technique in the operation of equipment.
- Ability to convey industry‑accepted standards regarding operational techniques of equipment.
- Ability to work with students from different backgrounds and cultures, as well as different knowledge and skill levels.
- Ability to work with and carry out lead instructor’s direction.
- Ability to interact with colleagues utilizing a team‑teaching concept.
- Ability to work in a non‑traditional teaching environment (range truck noise, street driving, unusual conditions that might arise).
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with staff, faculty, and administration at Lamar Institute of Technology.

- Must meet the minimum physical and mental requirements as set forth in FMCSR and Noise Emission Requirements, Chapter III, Federal Highway Administration, Department of Transportation, Subject e‑Physical Qualifications and Examinations, 391.41.
- Must be able to work in all types of weather conditions (range and street driving).
