Job summary

Chatham County is seeking a semi-skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to drive and maintain fleet used in solid waste and recycling collection. You will perform inspections, minor repairs and operate various heavy and stationary equipment while documenting materials hauled and weight data.

The role requires a high school diploma or GED and experience with heavy equipment, with a focus on safety, efficiency, and teamwork within the Solid Waste & Recycling Transportation division.

Qualifications

• General knowledge of operating and servicing heavy equipment.
• Knowledge of traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation.
• Awareness of occupational hazards and safety precautions for construction and maintenance equipment.
• Ability to identify and handle infectious and hazardous waste properly.
• Skill and care in operating various construction equipment.
• Ability to operate vehicles and equipment with automatic transmission.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; mechanical aptitude.

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate roll-off trucks, box trucks with lift gates, and department vehicles.
• Collect and transport waste and recyclables to facilities.
• Inspect, minor repair, grease and wash equipment, maintain records of materials hauled and weight tickets.
• Review reports, plan daily assignments, and verify weight tickets from markets.
• Operate heavy equipment (dozer, skid steer, front-end loader, tractor) and stationary equipment (compactors, pre-crushers).
• Collect waste from events and prepare facilities for events; monitor preventive maintenance of equipment.
• Assist co-workers and attend training; perform other duties as assigned.
