Summary: The Driver/Mechanic plays a key role in the delivery of freight and equipment to and from construction job sites. This position is responsible for the loading and unloading of vehicles, including semi-trucks, pickup trucks, flatbed trucks, and box trucks, and is expected to complete assignments safely, efficiently, and free from damage. Drivers are assigned and perform other miscellaneous duties in the tool and equipment shops as needed during downtimes to support the business. The successful candidate possesses excellent time management skills, a high level of reliability and professionalism, good communication skills, a positive attitude, and the ability to handle stressful situations calmly and effectively. The Driver/Mechanic also plays a key role in diagnosing, servicing, and repairing various systems on JH Kelly equipment and vehicles, including but not limited to semi-trucks/trailers, aerial lifts, forklifts, excavators, backhoes, cranes, air compressors, welders, pickups, and flatbeds. The successful candidate will be detail-oriented, highly skilled, and adaptable problem-solvers with a strong commitment to safety and teamwork.

Salary Range:$26-$36 per hour (DOE), FLSA non-exempt (OT eligible).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Load and unload trucks, flatbeds, and box trucks in the local region.
  • The typical work schedule is Monday through Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm however longer days and overnight stays may be needed for jobsite locations of greater distances.
  • Deliver and pick up tools from vendors and job sites.
  • Perform vehicle inspections pre and post-trip.
  • Keep tools and equipment yard clean and organized.
  • Diagnose, service, and repair various systems on JH Kelly equipment and vehicles; including but not limited to semi-trucks/trailers, aerial lifts, forklifts, excavators, backhoes, cranes, air compressors, welders, pickups, and flatbeds.
  • Order parts.
  • Use the scanner to diagnose vehicle problems.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area including service truck.

Relationships:

  • Maintain proactive and positive relationships within the JH Kelly team, and management, including shop and field craft personnel.
  • Foster positive relationships with customer representatives, vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, safety, CAD/BIM, accounting, IT, and all project teams.

Experience / Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in CDL driving.
  • Experience operating forklifts.
  • Must have a valid Washington state driver and Class A CDL license and clean driving record.

  • Safe driving habits that abide by all laws of the road.
  • Commitment to exemplary attendance record.
  • Self-directed and able to work with limited supervision.
  • Must be proficient in repairing diesel/gas engines and related components.
  • The ability to work collaboratively and professionally with customers, and field and office staff.

Physical Requirements:

Physical requirements for a Class A driver include the ability to operate commercial vehicles safely and efficiently, which involves sitting for extended periods, navigating various road and weather conditions, and maneuvering vehicles in tight spaces. Drivers must be capable of lifting and moving heavy objects up to 50 pounds, as well as performing tasks such as coupling and uncoupling trailers, inspecting vehicles for safety, and securing loads. Good vision, hearing, and hand-eye coordination are essential for operating vehicles and communicating effectively with dispatch and other drivers. Additionally, drivers must adhere to safety protocols, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and maintaining a clean driving record to ensure compliance with regulatory standards.
