Job summary

160 Driving Academy is the largest CDL training school in the country, with 90+ locations. As a CDL Class A Instructor Trainer, you teach students from pre-trip inspection to CDL exam success in the yard and behind the wheel.

You will be based at a designated yard, collaborating with fellow instructors and lead instructors. Occasional coverage at other regional yards may occur, including light yard upkeep and ensuring a clean, presentable environment for focused, hands-on learning.

Qualifications

• High school graduation certificate or equivalent.
• Valid Class A CDL with 24+ months of verifiable Class A tractor-trailer driving experience.
• State of licensure must match the applying location.
• Manual transmission experience and ability to teach.
• MVR free of violations.
• Pass DOT physical and drug/alcohol screening.
• Background check clearance required.
• Strong communication skills with the ability to mentor and coach students.
• Basic computer skills for tracking student progress and scheduling.
• Residence in the applying state or secured relocation.
• Must meet all state instructor licensing requirements.
• 90-day probationary period at hire.

Responsibilities

• Teach Class A driving skills in outdoor yards using manual and automatic transmissions.
• Guide students through pre-trip inspections, yard maneuvers, and on-road driving.
• Prepare students to pass CDL testing standards on the first attempt.
• Track student attendance and progress; provide additional support when needed.
• Maintain training records, evaluations, and documentation.
• Report incidents and accidents to your lead and corporate promptly.
• Collaborate with fellow instructors to deliver a consistent student experience.
• Keep the yard and building clean and presentable.
• Cover for other instructors at nearby regional yards in emergencies.
• End of 90-day probationary period review.
• Assist with transfer of trucks to repair operations.
• Adopt a student-centric approach with patience and professionalism.
• Physical ability to climb in/out of tractor cab and operate vehicles.
