Job Title: Public Transit Bus Driver
Public Transit Bus Drivers serve as frontline employees of Central Transportation, the public transit fixed route system for the Stevens Point Area. They perform essential tasks including the professional, safe, dependable, and courteous operation of transit buses, along with friendly customer service and support. As a Bus Driver, you are part of a dedicated team of drivers and staff.
Central Transportation provides fixed route and paratransit public transit services to the City of Stevens Point, and the Villages of Whiting and Plover.
Responsibilities:
- Safely and responsibly operate transit buses and vehicles according to departmental policies on fixed, shuttle, or express routes.
- Greet customers courteously and professionally, providing support as needed with sensitivity and tact.
- Collect and count fare media accurately, ensuring proper fares are paid.
- Record ridership data using tablets, ensuring accuracy in data entry.
- Enforce policies and maintain proper conduct on buses and transit facilities.
- Assist customers with boarding and alighting safely.
- Secure customers and mobility devices properly, following departmental procedures.
- Complete Safety and Security Inspection Reports on assigned buses.
- Represent Central Transportation and the City of Stevens Point professionally.
- Work effectively in a team and independently as required.
- Maintain on-time route performance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements:
- Valid and safe driving record.
- 1-2 years of verifiable driving experience with commercial vehicles; bus operation experience preferred.
- Ability to operate up to a 30-foot passenger bus safely.
- Availability to work nights, weekends, overtime, and emergency shifts.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of pre-employment drug test, physical exam, orientation, and a 6-month probation period.
Licensing and Background Checks:
- Submit to FTA drug and alcohol testing requirements pre-employment and as required.
- Possess or obtain a valid WI Commercial Driver’s License, Class B, with passenger “P” endorsement and air brake restriction removed.
- Pass Wisconsin DMV and criminal background checks.
- Maintain a physical exam and pass a DOT drug test.

- Good communication skills, able to follow and give oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read, understand, and retain training materials and procedures.
- Physical ability to sit long periods, stand, walk, bend, kneel, twist, and reach.
- Ability to memorize and operate assigned bus routes.
- Capable of working under high stress in a fast-paced environment.
- Assist passengers, including elderly and disabled, with or without mobility aids.
