Duties And Responsibilities
- Receive route paperwork, truck and trailer assignment and instructions for route.
- Review Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR) and acknowledge prior report for each piece of equipment. Provide written report for post trip inspection for all units. Document and report any defects or concerns with tractor and/or trailer within the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
- Conduct pre-trip, inter trip, and post trip inspection for all units operated in accordance with DOT and FMCSA regulation 49 C.F.R. 396.11.
- Verify load and load destination and proper load securement.
- Couple the tractor and trailer, inspect the fifth wheel plate, release handle and locking jaws.
- Scale load by gross weight and/or axles/tandems according to trailer type and state regulations. Adjust load if needed.
- Follow route plan and meet all delivery/pickup requirements for each store.
- Complete store clean outs as contracted. Load items for return to distribution center as needed.
- Communicate any issues affecting the route plan.
- Ensure cargo is secured throughout the delivery route.
- Complete and verify all required paperwork and temperature requirements.
- Accurately report hours of service in accordance with DOT and FMCSA regulations 49 C.F.R. 395.8 and 49 C.F.R. 395.11 using an electronic logging device (ELD). Review and certify logs daily.
- Report to work at designated times, well-rested and ready to drive.
- Document and report any defects or concerns with truck/tractor and/or trailer within the Driver Vehicle Inspection Report (DVIR).
Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
- Customer Service: Principles and processes for providing customer and personal services, including needs assessment and satisfaction evaluation.
- Winter Driving: Ability to put on snow chains and drive in snowy or slippery conditions.
- City Driving: Safe driving in congested city traffic and backing trailers into tight dock spaces.
- Fluid levels and Fueling: Proper procedures for checking fluids and refueling.
- FMCSA Regulations: Knowledge of federal safety requirements, including hours of service.
- Safe Operation of Commercial Vehicle: Always operate safely and professionally, following traffic laws.
- Defensive Driving: Attend safety training and utilize defensive driving techniques.
- Problem Solving: Ability to identify and resolve issues effectively.
- Pallet Jacks: Safe maneuvering of pallet jacks.
- Load Securing: Knowledge of load-securing methods.
- Route planning: Familiarity with store locations and surroundings.
Physical Environment and Working Conditions
Physical Demands
- Sitting for prolonged periods.
- Operate motorized vehicles and pallet jacks.
- Climb ramps and stairs.
- Lift approximately 35 pounds regularly, up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Push/pull pallets up to 3000 lbs.
- Crawl, crouch, kneel, or stoop as needed.
- Reach overhead to unstack boxes up to 6 feet high.
Working Conditions
- Varying hours, including overnight shifts.
- Use of PPE such as steel toe boots and slip-resistant shoes.
- Exposure to contaminants, hazardous chemicals, temperature extremes, and moving machinery.
- Potential exposure to vibrations or surfaces causing bodily strain.
