Job summary

Austin Pets Alive! is seeking a part-time Cat Careworker to support the Cat Program with hands-on animal care, volunteer coordination, and collaboration across departments.

The role emphasizes dependable, compassionate care, data-informed decisions, and teamwork in a fast-paced shelter environment. Responsibilities include assisting with intakes, adoptions support, scheduling flexibility, and maintaining a welcoming volunteer culture.

Qualifications

• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with staff, volunteers and customers.
• Strong time-management skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Comfortable working cross‑functionally and serving as a liaison between volunteers, customers, and team members.
• Experience in animal care or service-based roles is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Actively contribute to a volunteer-powered culture by partnering with volunteers during every shift.
• Work with volunteers to complete daily tasks in a collaborative, not siloed, manner.
• Support recruitment and onboarding by welcoming new volunteers and orienting them to the program.
• Help retain volunteers by offering guidance, feedback, and encouragement.
• Recognize volunteer contributions and provide appreciation and shoutouts.
• Provide hands-on guidance and clearly explain tasks to set volunteers up for success.
• Serve as an animal caseworker providing outcome-focused care to pets in the team or caseload.
• Clean and sanitize animal enclosures; provide fresh water and nutritious food.
