Job summary

The Akron-Summit County Public Library is hiring a Shelver (Main Library) in Akron, OH. This casual, part-time role supports the Children's Library & Teen division, working 8 to 20 hours weekly, including evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities include sorting and shelving materials, checking for proper arrangement, handling holds, and performing light clerical tasks. The position requires basic lifting, a work permit for those under 18, and a criminal background check for adults.

Qualifications

• Ability to arrange materials in alphabetical and numerical order.
• Strong customer service skills.
• Knowledge of the principles of intellectual freedom in libraries.
• Available to work 8–20 hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays.
• Able to frequently bend, lift light objects (<25 lbs) and push carts up to 200 lbs.
• Age and schooling certificate (work permit) required for under 18.
• Criminal background check required for those 18+.

Responsibilities

• Sorts and returns materials to shelves.
• Reads shelves for correct arrangement of materials.
• Shifts shelves and moves material carts as needed.
• Fills and routes holds.
• Performs simple clerical tasks (photocopying and labeling).
• Assists with opening and closing routines as needed.
• Maintains neatness in public service areas.
• Works at service desk during breaks as needed.
• Moves furniture and displays as required.
• Assists with packing and unpacking delivery crates and other circulation duties.
