Job summary

The Akron-Summit County Public Library seeks a part-time Shelver for the North Hill Branch in Akron, OH. The role focuses on shelving accuracy, maintaining orderly stacks, and providing friendly public service.

Responsibilities include sorting materials, light lifting, handling holds, assisting at the service desk when needed, and supporting opening/closing routines while ensuring clean, organized public spaces. Evening and weekend shifts are required.

Qualifications

• Ability to arrange materials in alphabetical and numerical order.
• Strong customer service skills for public interactions.
• Willingness to lift light objects and maneuver carts as needed.
• Availability to work 8–20 hours per week, including evenings and Saturdays.
• Understanding of library organization principles and OPERS/EAP eligibility.
• Criminal background check required for those 18 or older.

Responsibilities

• Sorts and returns library materials to their proper place on the shelves.
• Lifts, bends, and climbs as associated with shelving routines.
• Reads shelves for correctness of arrangement of materials.
• Shifts shelves where necessary and moves library material carts as needed.
• Checks for missing and/or damaged materials and fills holds.
• Searches shelves for specific materials as assigned and performs simple clerical tasks.
• Assists with opening/closing routines and public service desk coverage as needed.
• Maintains neatness in public service areas and assists with packing/unpacking deliveries.
