Job summary

The City of Sunnyvale is seeking a Library Page to perform routine clerical tasks and support library operations under supervision. You will sort and shelve materials, assist patrons, and help prepare facilities for events.

Requires high school enrollment or graduation and ability to use standard office equipment with good customer service and communication skills.

Job description

The final filing date is Monday, September 28, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. or after receiving 50 qualified applications, whichever is first.

Hours: Casual non-benefited employees are limited to working no more than twenty-five (25) hours per week and no more than 900 hours in a fiscal year (July 1-June 30).

Under immediate supervision of an assigned supervisor, performs routine tasks requiring some basic prior knowledge of library operations and programs; and performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The position of Library Page is the first level in the series responsible for providing routine clerical support for Library operations and programs by sorting and shelving library materials. This classification differs from the higher-level classification of Senior Library Page in that Library Page performs the most routine duties with limited contact with patrons.

  • Serves as primary staff for work related to the returning of library materials to their proper location.
  • Sorts and shelves library materials and ensures correct arrangement of Materials; identifies materials in need of mending.
  • Moves books and assists in organizing collections or special projects.
  • Searches materials for missing items and items on reserve.
  • Assists with setting up library facilities for special events and programs.
  • Receives and distributes mail.
  • Retrieves materials for patrons and delivers special materials from remote storage locations.
  • Removes materials from return bins and sorts them for shelving.
  • Receives materials donated by patrons.
  • May respond to the more routine patron questions regarding the location of library materials.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities. The position also requires grasping, repetitive hand movement and fine coordination in using a computer keyboard. Additionally, the position requires near and far vision in reading reports and work related documents and using a computer. Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal customer service. The need to lift, drag and push files, paper, books, carts and documents weighing up to 50 pounds is also required. Some of these requirements may be accommodated for otherwise qualified individuals requiring and requesting such accommodation.

Education and Experience:

The minimum qualifications for education and experience can be met in the following way:

  • Current High School enrollment, enrollment in a GED test course, or graduation from high school or tested equivalent.

Knowledge of:

  • Modern office equipment and computer software.
  • Principles of customer service.

Ability to:

  • Carry out routine clerical and library procedures.
  • Learn to file alphabetically and numerically.
  • Operate modern office equipment.
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the public and City employees.
  • Establish, maintain and promote positive and effective working relationships with employees and the public.
  • Demonstrate initiative and exercise good judgment in the performance of duties.
  • Learn the operations, policy and procedures of the Library.
  • Work as a team member.
  • Observe safety principles and work in a safe manner.

Willingness to:

Work irregular hours, evenings and weekends as required.

Licenses/Certificates

Possession and continued maintenance of a valid class C California driver's license or the ability to provide alternative transportation as approved by the appointing authority and a safe driving record.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in a public library environment.
  • Previous customer service or clerical experience.
  • Ability to speak other languages that represent the demographics of the community.
