Job summary

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is seeking a seasoned Manager of Carpentry and Painting to lead construction, renovation, and maintenance across the campus. This hands-on leader will oversee skilled trades staff and work closely with leadership and scientific teams to sustain a world-class research environment.

Responsibilities include designing and maintaining buildings, reading blueprints, enforcing safety, and managing budgets.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 15 years of carpentry experience.
• Proven supervisory or leadership experience preferred.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate effectively in English.

Responsibilities

• Designs, lays out, constructs, modifies, and maintains buildings.
• Works with wood, plastics, and other materials common to construction.
• Uses hand, portable, and fixed tools used in cabinetmaking and building.
• Interprets prints, sketches, and verbal instructions for projects.
• Performs complex construction tasks requiring advanced skills.
• Supervises carpentry and painting staff in day-to-day duties.
• Enforces safety including PPE for the department.
• Orders supplies, equipment, and services from approved vendors.
• Collaborates with Laboratory management to determine maintenance needs.
• Manages carpentry and painting operating budgets.
