Position Purpose

On both a scheduled work order basis and in response to emergencies, independently performs maintenance and repair to Dartmouth College academic and administration buildings, structures, and related fixtures and utilities, using a variety of trade practices associated with carpentry.

The Carpenter III displays an expert level of skill and is able to plan, execute and complete complex carpentry and related projects. Oversees carpentry work of the greatest complexity to ensure high standards are met. The Carpenter III maintains a specified level of skill and proficiency in the execution of duties related to maintenance and repair at Dartmouth College.

High School plus 5+ years' experience or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications - Skills, Knowledge And Abilities
  • High School GED or equivalent.
  • Eight- to 10 years of relevant experience in carpentry and related trades.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to be qualified under the terms of the Dartmouth College Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle policy.
  • Able to plan, execute and complete complex carpentry and related projects of a superior quality.
  • Mastery of shop mathematics, able to measure and cut material to specified dimensions, work with angles, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand building plans and sketches, able to create sketches to complete assigned work of all complexities.
  • Highly skilled in the use of all hand tools, not limited to screwdrivers, pliers, hammer, wrenches, socket wrenches, tape measures, levels.
  • Highly skilled in the use of all hand and shop (stationary) power tools, not limited to drills, hammer drill, saws, sanders, planers.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and work independently without supervision, exercising sound judgment and applying strong problem-solving skills.
  • Strong customer service skills and good communications skills; ability to communicate work to be performed with college employees and building occupants.
  • Ability to document and record issues and procedures.
  • Computer skills including basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, smartphones or tablets.
  • Ability to perform demanding physical activity, work at heights and perform tasks requiring manual dexterity under physically difficult and/or strenuous conditions.
  • Must be capable of participating in the College's respiratory protection program and capable of responding to alarms including potentially hazardous environments.
  • Willingness to work overtime when required.

Responsibilities
  • Core responsibilities include request work orders, advise supervisor of materials/services required for repairs, supervise or assist coworkers in project/repair work. Work with trades personnel in other shops. Communicate directly and respectfully with building occupants, who may be inconvenienced or affected by scheduled work. Oversees carpentry work of the greatest complexity ensuring that high quality standards are met.
  • Interacts with internal trades technicians to perform repairs and renovation, coordinating work scope.
  • Performs specialized and general carpentry work and maintenance. Examples include: repairs shades and blinds; installs shelving boards; installs or repairs rest-room accessories; makes adjustments to doors and door hardware; completes modular furniture repairs, lab casework repairs, removal and installation; installs wood and metal framing; installs trim for doors, windows, floors, walls, ceilings, etc.; completes window repair and installation; fabricates and installs cabinets, bookcases and “built-in” furniture; installs and repairs structural elements. Selects materials and supplies for assigned work.
  • Fills out fire-door evaluations.
  • Repairs drywall by selectively removing damaged wall and patching; installs drywall under instruction; finishes drywall to a level 4 as defined by the Gypsum Association (GA-214); protects surrounding areas.
  • Grouts and seals tile; assists Mason with tile repairs; is able to replace and install tile for smaller projects.
  • Applies caulking for sealing purposes.
  • Assists campus Roofer with roof repairs; is able to independently patch membrane roofs; is skilled in installing flashing for membrane and shingle roofs.
  • Maintains tools including tool sharpening.
  • Operates a motor vehicle to pick up supplies required for the maintenance of properties located throughout Hanover and surrounding area.
Mentorship
  • Works with and mentor Building Repair Technician I, II and Carpenter I and II explaining the procedures being performed and the reasoning behind those actions. When qualified, allows the technician to perform the work under supervision.
Working Conditions
  • Works from ladders, scaffolds, lifts, and platforms.
  • Work requires bending, keeling, standing, climbing, and working in stretched, cramped or awkward positions.
  • Work involves regular lifting, carrying, or holding objects weighing from up to 80 pounds.
  • Work is performed: indoors; outdoors; in harsh weather; in areas that are dirty, or smoky and where fumes are present, in underground manholes.
  • Is exposed to cuts and bruises and more serious injuries working on ladders,
