Fitchburg State University in Fitchburg, MA seeks a Carpenter II to perform carpentry work across campus, including installation, repair and renovation of walls, doors and related fixtures. Qualifications

  • Three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking.
  • Diploma or certificate from a recognized trade/school in carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking may substitute for up to two years of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Provide instruction for subordinates regarding emergencies, feasibility of repairs and scheduling of work.

  • Inspect buildings for needed carpentry repairs or alterations and estimate durations and material costs.
  • Draw sketches or lay out work, interpret blueprints, and plan repairs or alterations.
  • Perform related carpentry tasks such as framing, painting minor repairs and sharpening tools.

General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

Applies carpentry techniques and uses carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and renovate walls, windows, doors; stairs, floors, ceilings, etc. Installs and repairs locks, locking devices and related systems. Inspects buildings to determine need for carpentry repairs or alterations. Interprets and sketches layouts of carpentry work to be pone, and performs related work as required. Makes and/or installs building and door signs, and makes desk nameplates. Provide instruction for subordinates regarding handling of emergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alteration and the scheduling of work. Major work contacts are with building occupants, vendors, trades workers and other agency staff.

Incumbents of positions at this level receive general supervision from employees of higher grade who provide procedural guidance, assign work and review performance through inspection and verbal reports for quality and compliance with standard procedures.

Detailed Statement of Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide instruction for subordinates regarding handling of emergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alteration and the scheduling of work.
  • Major work contacts are with building occupants, vendors, trades workers and other agency staff.
  • Incumbents of positions at this level exercise direct supervision (i.e., not through an intermediate level supervisor) over, assign work to and review the performance of 1-5 skilled tradesmen.
  • Maintains buildings and related structures applying carpentry techniques arid using carpentry tools to construct, alter, repair and/or install walls, stairs, floors, ceilings, windows, doors, roofs, gutters, locks, air-conditioners, mail slots handicapped chair rails and ramps, shelving, etc.
  • Installs locks and locking devices in doors, desks, file cabinets, etc. Assembles and installs locks using power and hand tools.
  • Repairs and overhauls locking devices such as mortise, rim and key, combination, and panic devices.
  • Inspects buildings needing carpentry repair or alterations, estimates job duration and the cost and/or quantities of labor and materials needed to complete the job, and reports results of inspection to those who have complained of unsafe conditions or who have requested alteration work.
  • Interprets and/or draws up sketches, patterns, blueprints, instructions, and/or layouts of work to be done.
  • Performs structural repair, alteration or improvement work such as lowering ceilings and paneling rooms; preparing surfaces for plaster or cement work; studding, and plastering walls and cracks in floors or around windows; taping joints on sheetrock; and pre-cementing and/ or replacing Formica tops. Paint as needed for minor repairs/improvements that have been completed by the employee (for example replace a section of drywall this section would be painted by the carpenter.
  • Confers with unit control section, various department heads or supervisors regarding handling of emergencies, the feasibility of performing repair or alterations and the scheduling of work.
  • Makes and/or installs building and door signs and desk nameplates, using a manually operated sign machine; orders materials and supplies and cleaning materials, and uses judgment to determine the size� of signs and lettering to insure uniformity throughout campus.
  • Performs related work such as framing pictures; making window and door screens; drilling holes in signs; ordering materials and supplies and cleaning materials; and sharpening and tempering various tools and equipment.
  • Operates rigging for carpentry duties.
  • Other assigned duties within the Caprenter Series specification.
Requirements:

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
1. Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in
carpentry, woodworking or cabinetmaking work, or (B) any equivalent combination of the required
experience and the substitutions below.
2. Substitutions:
a. A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, vocational or vocational school at high
school level or higher, with a major in carpentry, woodworking, or cabinetmaking may be
substituted for a maximum of two years of the required experience.

Additional Information:

This is a full-time, non-exempt, benefits-eligible position in the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) bargaining unit with a title Carpenter II. The bi-weekly pay rate is $2,152.54, grade 15, Step 01, which equates to an annual salary of $55,966.04.
