HICKORY CITY SCHOOLS JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: CARPENTER/GENERAL MAINTENANCE

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB

Under direct supervision, responsible for on-site maintenance repairs and assisting qualified personnel when major repairs are needed. Reports to the Director of Operations and Maintenance.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs semi-skilled roof, ceiling, and door hardware repair functions.
  • Assists in minor repairs and maintenance of roofing systems, including drain clearance, debris clearing and temporary patching as required.
  • Assists in the repair of drywall and moving or altering of non-load bearing walls.
  • Assists in making and repairing cabinets.
  • Replaces floor tile.
  • Cuts and installs glass as needed.
  • Performs minor repairs on furnishings, fixtures and equipment, including locker repairs.
  • Performs minor repairs on plumbing, mechanical and electrical equipment.
  • Assists maintenance personnel when major repairs are needed.
  • Loads and unloads material, equipment, parts and supplies, including furnishings and fixtures.
  • Requests, maintains and is responsible for the inventory and accountability of material, tools, repair parts and equipment assigned and/or issued for use.
  • Collects and disposes of trash and non-hazardous waste as required.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Properly prepares the work area, conducts maintenance and repair tasks safely and efficiently, and cleans/restores the work area after repair or installation is complete. Coordinates all actions with school administration, faculty and staff affected in order to preserve safety and minimize disruption to teaching and learning.

Erects, moves, and works from scaffolding and ladders; attends to the need for safety precautions.

Performs simple elements of many trade fields.

Ability through training to acquire general knowledge of all department operating procedures to include but not limited to the facilities management work order system.

Responsible for ensuring assigned automotive equipment is operated and maintained as outlined in applicable district’s procedures.

Performs other related maintenance functions as directed by the Director of Operations and Maintenance.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

Graduation from high school and experience in maintenance-related area preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job functions.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Physical Requirements:

Must be physically able to operate power tools and mechanical equipment. Must be able to exert up to 80 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 25 pounds of force frequently. Must be able to perform all related tasks including lifting and climbing as needed to perform the job functions. Physical demand requirements are for medium to heavy work.

Interpersonal Communication:

Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information.

Language Ability:

Requires the ability to read simple forms. Requires the ability to prepare time sheets.

Intelligence:

Requires the ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form.

Numerical Aptitude:

Requires the ability to add, subtract, divide and multiply.

Form/Spatial Aptitude:

Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width and shape.

Motor Coordination:

Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using tools.

Manual Dexterity:

Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as maintenance equipment. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination:

Requires the ability to differentiate between colors or shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament:

Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under minimal levels of stress.

Physical Communications:

Requires the ability to talk and hear.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of safety rules and regulations, fire safety rules and regulations, and bomb threat and disaster procedures.

Skill in the use and care of equipment and tools used in performing work assignments. Ability to follow simple instructions. Ability and physical strength sufficient to move objects.
