The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has an opening for a Carpenter. In this role, you will, under limited supervision, construct, deconstruct, erect, install, and repair structures and fixtures using hand and power tools.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, machines, or power saws.
- Read and comprehend specifications from sketches or building plans to prepare project layouts, determine dimensions, and estimate materials required.
- Assemble and fasten materials to make frameworks or props, using hand tools, wood screws, nails, dowel pins, or glue.
- Build, repair, install, and/or deconstruct crates, boxes, cabinets, walls, furniture, doors, frameworks, floors, and other fixtures.
- Erect, inspect, and dismantle scaffolding for use above ground level.
- Remove damaged or defective parts or sections of structures and repair or replace them.
- Install walls, paneling, ceilings, doors, fixtures such as windows, frames, flooring, trim, or hardware.
- Finish surfaces of woodwork or wallboard in buildings.
- Inspect, install, remove, and repair ceiling or floor tiles, carpets, wall coverings, siding, or woodwork.
- Construct forms and chutes for pouring concrete.
- Apply shock-absorbing, sound-deadening, and decorative paneling to ceilings and walls.
- Possess knowledge of drawings, materials, tools, and methods involved in the construction or repair of buildings and other structures.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by management.

Basic (or Required) Qualifications:
- A high school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of five years of industrial journeyman-level experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant carpentry experience.
- Ability to read and perform basic mathematical calculations.
- Must have a valid Tennessee driver’s license.
- Must be able to wear applicable personal protective equipment.
- Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions; a post-offer, pre-hire physical will be required.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Successful completion of formal training or apprenticeship programs and industrial experience are preferred.
- Experience with metal stud wall construction and metal doors/frames/hardware installation.
- Experience with drop ceilings and vinyl floor installation.
- Experience with industrial scaffold erection.
