Job summary

Ysleta Independent School District is seeking a skilled carpenter to perform preventive and emergency carpentry work in school facilities. The role involves fabricating and installing cabinetry, doors, and fixtures, reading blueprints, and ensuring safety compliance.

Experience includes three years of verifiable carpentry work and cabinet making; a valid Texas/NM driver’s license is required. The position may require supervision of a Trades Helper and operating a spray booth as needed.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED; three years of verifiable carpentry experience and related technical training.
• Cabinet making experience preferred.
• Valid Texas/New Mexico driver’s license; subject to district drug and alcohol screening; insurable by district carrier.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive and emergency repairs and installation in rough/finished carpentry and related areas.
• Fabricate, repair, replace, install and finish cabinetry, countertops, bookshelves and other school-related fixtures; modify facilities.
• Read blueprints/schematics, prepare material lists and perform field layouts.
• Manage vehicle, materials, tools and records; supervise Trades Helper as assigned.
• Follow safety practices and participate in specifications/evaluations for lumber and equipment.

Job description

Perform preventive and emergency repairs and installation in the field of rough and finished carpentry and carpentry-related areas under general supervision in accordance with established priorities and policies. Tasks are diverse in nature and require use of individual analysis and judgment. Adhere to federal and state laws, as well as district policies, procedures, and regulations.

Essential Functions

• Perform preventive and emergency repairs and installation in the field of rough and finished carpentry and carpentry-related areas; prioritize tasks to allow for problems or emergency situations; refer problems that cannot be solved to immediate supervisor.
• Fabricate, repair, replace, install and finish cabinetry, countertops, laminating, bookshelves, chalkboards, tack boards, doors and other school-related accessories and modify existing facilities through construction of walls, doorways, ceilings, duct chases and other assemblies; cut door windows, bevel and install hinges, locks and kickplates.
• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics and working drawings; prepare accurate material lists; perform field layouts.
• Be responsible for vehicle, vehicle inventory, materials, tools and record keeping necessary to satisfactorily complete assigned task(s).
• Supervise and delegate tasks to the Trades Helper as assigned; cooperate with coworkers and routinely report necessary information to immediate supervisor.
• Follow established safety practices in accordance with district policies, particularly as it applies to shop equipment and the spray booth.
• Participate in the preparation of specifications and the evaluation of competitive solicitations for lumber, carpentry accessories and equipment.
• Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.

• Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.
• Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties; support district/department goals.
• Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); three (3) years of verifiable carpentry experience and related technical training experience; cabinet making experience preferred. Must possess a valid Texas/New Mexico driver's license; subject to the district's drug and alcohol screening policy and regulation; must be insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier.

Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently; work under all weather conditions; be adaptable to work a shift schedule and/or hours other than regularly assigned; extended periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, kneeling, stooping and lifting.
