Job summary

Kehoe Designs in Chicago, IL is seeking a hands-on Carpenter to construct custom props and furniture for events. You will read blueprints, select materials, and assemble pieces using a range of wood, Plexiglas, laminate, and mirrors.

You will work under the Warehouse Manager, collaborate with the carpentry team, manage materials, estimate production times, and ensure timely delivery while maintaining a clean, safe workspace. Flexible hours including evenings and weekends are required.

Qualifications

• Ability to read, write, and speak simple English.
• Strong verbal communication to collaborate with the Warehouse team.
• Must provide basic tools (wire cutter, utility knife).
• Proficient with hand tools and power tools used in carpentry.
• Deep knowledge of woodworking machinery and safe operation.
• Ability to read and interpret measurements and blueprints.
• Flexible to work evenings and weekends.

Responsibilities

• Build and construct custom props and furniture from wood, Plexiglas, and mirrors following design specs.
• Perform detailed carving, beveling, and finishing work.
• Collaborate with carpentry team to ensure smooth production and deadlines.
• Assist in structural design, layout planning, and installation.
• Interpret blueprints and project specs for high-quality work.
• Estimate materials and production times, prioritize tasks to minimize delays.
• Determine lumber size and strength requirements for specific jobs.
• Measure and calculate precise dimensions using a tape measure.
• Prepare props for events (wrapping fabric, drilling, painting, staining).
• Manage and organize supplies/inventory; ensure proper storage and usage.
• Wrap and unwrap furniture and props for delivery.
• Maintain a clean, safe workspace by organizing tools and sweeping debris.

Position Overview:

The Carpenter is responsible for the construction and assembly of custom props and furniture for events and internal company needs. This hands-on role involves using various materials such as wood, Plexiglas, laminate, and mirrors to create both large-scale and smaller, detailed items. Working under the guidance of the Warehouse Manager, the Carpenter also takes directions from the Warehouse Assistant Manager, Warehouse Lead, and Carpentry Shop Lead to ensure smooth operations and timely delivery of projects

Qualifications:

• Ability to read, write, and speak simple English.
• Strong verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with the Warehouse team.
• Familiarity with proper packing methods is helpful.
• Must provide basic tools (wire cutter, utility knife).
• Proficient in using a variety of hand tools (hammers, screwdrivers, drills, staple guns, tape measure) and power tools (table saw, jigsaw, chop saw, router, circular saw, and band saw).
• In-depth knowledge of woodworking machinery, specifically saw machines, and the ability to operate them safely and effectively.
• Strong understanding of measurements, including the ability to accurately read and calculate dimensions, ensuring precision in all carpentry tasks.
• Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Pay & Benefits | What You’ll Receive

• Hourly wage and o vertime pay will be provided for hours worked beyond 40 in a workweek at 1.5x the regular rate of pay, in compliance with Illinois labor laws.
