Job description

The University of Virginia's Health System Physical Plant has an exciting opportunity for a Carpenter, which supports Facilities Management's goal of providing consistent, cost-effective, and reliable carpentry and maintenance to the University community. The incumbent performs work of moderate difficulty with responsibilities for constructing, erecting, installing, and repairing structures of wood, plywood, wallboards, sheet metal, and other building materials. The Carpenter also performs other miscellaneous duties such as lock installation and repair, replacing glass and ceiling and floor tiles, and other building trade-related duties.

Duties Include

• Provide framing, door, window, and hardware repairs. Repair and install finish millwork, casework and other wood products.
• Work using of a variety of diagnostic tools, instruments, equipment, hand and power tools.
• Perform a variety of carpentry repairs identified during facility inspections or submitted by customer requests.
• Working knowledge of performing maintenance in residential and occupied spaces.
• Maintain accurate work order records and timecards in work order system.
• Ability to respond to urgent repair needs outside of normal working hours.
• Attend safety meetings, classes, and training seminars as directed by the supervisor to keep informed of safety issues and safe working practices.
• Inform customers of job status, reasons for and duration of expected delays, as well as refer customers to the supervisor when appropriate.
• Perform all work in accordance with safety rules and procedures, such as OSHA, federal, state, and local regulations.
• Work productivity in a team environment to complete projects and assigned tasks
• Provide event support as assigned
• In addition to the above, more job responsibilities may be assigned.

Required Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience: A minimum of four years of experience in carpentry and woodworking.
• Licensure: Valid Driver's license with positive points balance and at least 2 years of driving history.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience installing, maintaining, adjusting, and/or troubleshooting commercial door closers and automatic door systems in institutional or commercial settings.

Compensation

The Anticipated Hiring Range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00 ($52,000 - $62,400 Annually), commensurate with experience. This is a full-time position with UVA benefits.

For the position, the selected candidate will be conducted on all new hires prior to employment.

Physical Demands

This position requires regular walking, standing, kneeling, crawling, squatting, and climbing ladders or stairs, lifting and carrying of various weights. Repetitive motion for grasping, pulling, pushing, and operating hand and power tools; work may occur in a variety of indoor and outdoor conditions and environments.
