University of California, Los Angeles is seeking a skilled Carpenter to perform a variety of carpentry duties, build and repair cabinets, partitions, walls and ceilings, and install door hardware. You will read blueprints and work under supervision to ensure safety and quality.

Responsibilities include installing metal studs, drywall, insulation, trim, and shelving, operating tools, and maintaining workmanship and safety standards on a daily basis.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a certified 4-year trade-related apprenticeship or equivalent experience and education.
  • Valid CA noncommercial Class C driver's license required.
  • Journey-level carpentry skills with knowledge of materials, tools and safety.
  • Ability to read plans/blueprints and perform basic layout math for costs.
  • Strong writing skills for simple reports and documentation.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and collaborate with campus teams.
  • Excellent oral communication to convey information clearly.
  • Knowledge of safety practices and codes applicable to carpentry.
  • Experience with metal stud framing, drywall, partitions, and trimwork.

Responsibilities

  • Perform skilled carpentry duties under supervision; build, repair and install cabinets, partitions, floors and ceilings.
  • Read blueprints to carry out assignments and work with minimal direction.
  • Set door jambs, hang doors, install metal window frames, insulate walls and hang drywall.
  • Install door hardware including panic hardware and construct forms; operate and maintain tools.

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Sr. Superintendent of Carpentry Shop & through direct verbal/written work assignments from the Supervising Carpenter or Lead Carpenter perform a variety of skilled carpentry duties. Build, repair, install a variety of carpentry-related projects to include: Build cabinets & repair wall partitions, floors and/or ceiling systems, metal stud framing. Set door jambs, Hang doors, install metal window frames, insulate walls, hang drywall, install all types of door hardware including panic hardware, concrete forms, scaffolding & special projects to achieve maximum performance, efficiency of operation & quality workmanship on daily basis. Operate & maintain carpentry tools & equipment. Read blueprints in order to carry out assignments. Work independently & follow through on assignments with minimal direction. Maintain appropriate & safe working practices.

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of a variety of materials, equipment, methods and tools of the Carpenter's trade, including achievement of operational level journey-level skills (Required)
  • Working knowledge of Class A construction, UBC, OSHA, fire codes, construction procedures and ADA requirements (ADA/Fire hardware and installation). (Required)
  • Working knowledge of standard safety practices and equipment used related to the Carpenter's trade. (Required)
  • Skill in: reading plan specifications and/or blueprints; basic mathematics to calculate layouts and offsets and provide accurate cost calculations; modifying and/or adapting designs, procedures or methods to make necessary alterations and modifications. (Required)
  • Writing skills sufficient to complete simple phrases using correct grammar and spelling to complete reports that are accurate and easy to comprehend. (Required)
  • Ability to: prioritize assignments and follow through to complete work in a timely manner; establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, clients, managers and the campus community (Required)
  • Excellent oral communication skills to obtain or convey clear and concise information. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of: OSHPD and JCAHO Regulations; U.L. Fire Stopping (Preferred)
  • Ability to install metal stud and drywall partitions, suspended ceiling, fiberglass reinforced paneling, trim work, laminate, build and install shelving and other woodwork. (Required)
  • Ability to troubleshoot problems in structural woodwork. (Required)
Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations
  • Other Type of Degree Satisfactory completion of a certified 4- year trade related apprenticeship program or equivalent experience and education. (Required)
  • Must possess, upon hire, and maintain a valid CA noncommercial Class C License in accordance with the California (CA) Department of Motor Vehicles. (Required)
Special Conditions for Employment
  • Background Check: Continued employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory background investigation.
  • Live Scan Background Check: A Live Scan background check must be completed prior to the start of employment.
  • Pre-Placement Physical: Employment is contingent upon the completion of a satisfactory physical examination.
  • Driving Record: The position is subject to the California DMV "Pull Notice System" and continued employment is contingent upon proof of a satisfactory driving record.
  • Ability to stand, crawl, walk, bend, stoop, and kneel; push, pull, lift, lower, or carry up to 80 lbs with assistance. (Required)
  • Must be able to work overtime or various shifts when needed. (Required)
  • Possession of valid California Driver's License Class C and the ability to drive a truck or other light vehicle. (Required)
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors, in wet or humid weather, and in fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures or adverse situations and conditions (e.g. dirty, noisy etc.). (Required)
