Job summary

Spirit Rock Meditation Center is seeking a Caretaker Extra-Hire to support daily operations across the campus. This on-site, part-time role involves housekeeping and custodial duties to keep facilities clean, safe, and welcoming for staff, teachers, and practitioners.

The position is described as 19 hours per week or fewer, non-exempt, with a varied schedule. Compensation is $22–$24 per hour, plus benefits designed to support staff wellbeing.

Qualifications

• One to three years of experience in a similar role.
• Familiarity with custodial equipment and basic maintenance tasks.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and in a team.
• Proficiency with computers and software including Windows OS, MS Office and Google Docs.
• Valid Driver’s License required.
• Interest in mindfulness and meditation is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Clean and maintain all assigned campus facilities for ongoing operations and events.
• Ensure the site is safe and presentable, identifying repairs as needed.
• Use cleaning supplies and equipment to perform tasks.
• Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment.
• Lift and move items such as linens and furniture.
• Train guests on cleaning tasks during retreats.
• Set up event spaces and break down after events.
• Deliver and pick up mail around campus.

Summary of Job:

The Caretaker Extra-Hire supports the daily operations of Spirit Rock’s events, classes, and retreats through housekeeping and custodial work across the campus. This role helps maintain a clean, welcoming, and safe environment for staff, teachers, and practitioners alike, and offers a meaningful way to support Spirit Rock’s mission of helping others cultivate wisdom and compassion in their lives, for the benefit of all beings.

Employment Status: Extra Hire (19 hours / week or fewer) / non-exempt

Schedule: varies/as needed/on-site

Compensation: $22-$24 / hr

Specific Responsibilities:

• Clean and maintain all assigned campus facilities (e.g. dormitories, meditation halls, administrative areas, restrooms, kitchen and dining hall etc.) for ongoing operations as well as the opening and closing of onsite retreats
• Ensure the site is suitable for safe operations which includes maintained in an attractive and clean condition and helps to identify necessary repairs
• Use supplies (e.g. a variety of cleaning solutions, paper products, equipment, etc.) and equipment (vacuum cleaners, etc.)
• Maintain inventory of all necessary supplies
• Lift, carry and deliver various items (e.g. linens, supplies, furniture, etc.) to the appropriate parties
• Train guests on cleaning tasks assigned to them during retreat programs
• Setup event space (chairs, cushions etc.) for incoming guests and breaks down upon completion
• Deliver and pick-up US Mail to/from Woodacre post-office and distribute around campus

Qualifications:

• One to three years’ experience in a similar position(s)
• Demonstrated knowledge of equipment used for custodial care
• Work with minimum direct supervision and operate effectively on a team
• Proficiency with computers and related software and technology including Windows OS/MS Office/Google Docs
• Valid Driver’s License required
• Interest in mindfulness and meditation a plus

Working Conditions:

• Ability to work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions
• Ability to sit, walk or stand for extended periods including walking up and down stairs, ladders and hillsides
• Ability to lift, carry, push or pull objects up to 40 pounds
• Ability to perform moderately difficult manipulative tasks
• Ability to communicate clearly on a telephone and walkie-talkie
• This position will be exposed to chemical substances that are typical for maintenance, janitorial and landscaping work.
• Must be able to regularly speak and write in English
• Specific vision abilities required are close vision, middle distance vision and color vision
• The hours are on an “as-needed” basis and typically will be less than 19 hours per week
