PM Shift: 3 pm to 11:30 pm. 4/2 rotation schedule.

The purpose of this position guide is to establish and define the duties, responsibilities, authority and reporting relationships of the position of the Caregiver. The caregiver is the key person delivering direct hands‑on care to the residents. Their work is centre piece of the facility’s day‑to‑day operations. Reports to either Shift Manager, Care Coordinator or Administrator.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Know the location and disposition of all residents (under direct care) at all times
  • Ensure each resident looks clean and presentable throughout the day
  • Assist with dressing, applying make‑up, combing hair, cleaning eyeglasses, and assisting with other personnel grooming tasks as needed
  • Keep residents’ rooms in proper order throughout the day, including tidying rooms, making beds and putting clothes away
  • Assist residents by providing for their comfort, safety and enjoyment
  • Keep internal charts current, know each resident’s needs and report all observed physical and emotional changes in residents to the shift manager or RCC or Administrator. Report should occur by the end of the shift and should be documented in the change‑over notes, unless immediate intervention is needed
  • Attend periodic staff meetings and in‑service training and mandatory meeting as required
  • Read, follow and sign any care plans and posted messages and/or updates during each shift
  • Observe Resident’s Rights, as posted within the facility
  • Promptly respond to resident calls for assistance
  • In emergency situations, assist residents according to the Emergency Plan of the facility
  • Assist with First Aid as directed
  • Maintain a cooperative and cheerful attitude when relating to residents or their guests
  • Assist residents at mealtimes as directed or needed
  • Assist residents with personal hygiene needs as needed throughout the shift
  • Assist residents with daily recreational activities, including crafts, games, music and exercise and encourage participation
  • Follow any written work schedules and service schedules
  • Ensure that residents in group are all receiving quality care
  • All required documentation is done properly and in a timely manner
  • Schedule is followed
  • Perform other duties assigned

Qualifications:
  • Each employee must have a physical examination and tuberculin test performed by a physician within seven (7) days after hire (unless regulations stipulate completion before employment).
  • The Department of Social Services (DSS) licensing agency requires that fingerprint cards and an affidavit on criminal convictions be submitted for the purpose of conducting a criminal record review. An approval must be obtained to retain employment.
  • All employees must keep their FIRST‑AID certification current
  • Skill in compassionately caring for elderly, knowledge of proper caregiving techniques and ability to care for several residents at one time
  • Organizational skills: maintain order and efficiency in performing job duties, maintain constant pace
  • Mental: handle stress well, stay calm under pressure, think and make decisions consistent with policies and procedures and licensing regulations
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, required
  • At least some prior experience in caring
  • At least 18 years or older, required
  • Certified Nurse Assistant and/or Home Health Aide Certificate, preferred
Body Positioning:

Spend time bending, twisting or lifting up to 50 pounds, keeping or regaining balance, making repetitive motions, standing, using your hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools, walking and running.
