Job summary

Valencia College’s West Campus Career Development team is seeking a dedicated Career Advisor to guide students through career exploration, major selection, and transfer planning. You will engage with students via one-on-one and group advising, workshops, and presentations to support career readiness and success.

The ideal candidate will have strong communication, initiative, and a student-centered approach, with experience in higher education settings and direct guidance roles.

Qualifications

  • Strong interpersonal and interviewing skills for student guidance.
  • Effective written communication and ability to convey information clearly.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team to support students.

Responsibilities

  • Assists students in making their career and life plans based on a review of assessment information, past performances, and future educational and vocational goals.
  • Provides direction and resources related to the research of major and transfer requirements at other institutions.
  • Advises students on choosing the appropriate classes for their major and career/transfer goals.
  • Educates students about the interview process, including: application, resume and cover letter writing, portfolios, and interview techniques.
  • Assists with daily operations of the Career Center, publicizes services, hours, and career materials available to students, faculty and the community.
  • Provides developmental advising related to goal setting, career planning, and educational planning.
  • Orients students to Focus 2 Career.
  • Maintains accurate records regarding utilization of materials and services.
  • Advises students about careers.
  • Accesses, inputs and retrieves data from a computer.
  • Administers assessments as assigned by Career Center Coordinators, and Counselors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

As a Career Advisor, you’ll connect with students through individual and group advising, workshops, and presentations focused on career exploration and career readiness. We’re looking for a student-centered, collaborative professional who brings strong communication skills, curiosity, initiative, and a genuine interest in helping students succeed.

The ideal candidate will also have experience working with students in higher education, particularly in roles that involve direct support or guidance. A background in providing service-especially in educational or workforce positions-and solid research abilities are highly valued.

  • This position operates in a primarily onsite environment.

Working Conditions

General Working Conditions

This job primarily operates in a professional office environment. The employee will routinely operate standard office equipment including but not limited to computers, keyboards, mouse, phones, photocopiers, printers, scanners, filing cabinets and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.

Typical physical competencies include but are not limited to frequently remaining stationary, moving, reaching, positioning self and occasionally ascending/descending, lifting/moving objects weighing between 5-15 pounds. This job also entails frequently communicating, discerning and exchanging information, detecting and perceiving objects up close, at a distance, and the ability to adjust focus. Cognitive abilities include but are not limited to frequently using discretion, judgment, reasoning, memory, learning, maintaining confidentiality, comprehension, problem solving, and decision-making.
