Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Care Companion provides supportive patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Provides support to the patient including, but not limited to, care and comfort, personal care and hygiene, toileting, and mobility.
  2. Creates a safe environment for patients.
  3. Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns.
  4. Provides high-level customer service to all patients, family members, visitors, and employees.
  5. Participates in hand-off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and departure.

Qualifications
  • Licensing/Certification: BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain prior to direct patient care)
  • Education: None required
  • Work Experience: Recent experience in a healthcare environment preferred
  • Skills: Ability to communicate clearly, understand and follow directions, knowledge of patient safety standards, infection prevention, teamwork, basic hygiene, compassionate care, accountability, escalation procedures, and safety advocacy.
Working Conditions

Periods of high stress, exposure to physical altercations, verbal abuse, high noise levels, bright lights, hazardous substances, body fluids, blood, interruptions, and working alone for extended periods.

Physical Requirements

Varies from lifting, pushing, pulling, stooping, crawling, climbing, balancing, bending, sitting, walking, to standing, with specified weight limits. Additional requirements include manual dexterity, shift work, maneuvering patients, hearing alarms, reaching, repetitive movements, visual acuity, color vision, and exposure to various risks and hazards.

Patient Population

Knowledge to provide age-appropriate care for neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics, with understanding of growth, development, and specific needs.
