Summary of Primary Function/General Purpose of Position

The Care Companion provides supportive patient care under the guidance of the Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and within the policies, procedures, and guidelines of Bon Secours Mercy Health.

Essential Job Functions

1. Provides support to the patient including, but not limited to, care and comfort, personal care and hygiene, toileting, and mobility.
2. Creates a safe environment for patients.
3. Acts as liaison between patient and nurse to report changes or concerns.
4. Provides high-level customer service to all patients, family members, visitors, and employees.
5. Participates in hand-off/report of pertinent information regarding patient and departmental needs upon arrival and departure.

Qualifications

• Licensing/Certification: BLS Basic Life Support (preferred upon hire, must obtain from approved source prior to direct patient care)
• Education: None
• Work Experience: Recent experience in a healthcare environment, with a preference for the setting in which they are applying (preferred)
• Skills: Ability to clearly communicate with healthcare team, understand and follow directions, knowledge of patient safety standards, infection prevention, teamwork, hygiene, compassionate care, accountability, escalation of concerns, safety advocacy

Working Conditions

Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads may occur. May be exposed to physical altercations, verbal abuse, high noise levels, bright lights, hazardous substances, body fluids, blood, and other infectious materials. May have periods of constant interruptions and work alone for extended periods.

Exposure to chemicals, moving mechanical parts, dust, fumes, electrical shocks, electromagnetic energy, and high-pitched noises may occur.

Patient Population

Provides care appropriate to the age of patients served, including neonates, infants, pediatrics, adolescents, adults, and geriatrics. Demonstrates knowledge of growth and development principles and assesses patient data to meet individual needs.
