Job summary

The University of Michigan Health-West is seeking a Medical Assistant for the Cardiovascular department on days, full-time. In an ambulatory setting, you will handle administrative tasks such as charting, patient calls and form completion, and perform clinical duties including vitals, patient prep and medication administration as directed.

You will support the care team, keep exam rooms stocked, assist during examinations, and ensure infection prevention standards.

Qualifications

• High school degree or GED required.
• Current Certification as Medical Assistant required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required by 3/1/2025.
• Previous experience as Medical Assistant preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to effectively work with the medical team.
• Ability to effectively communicate with patients and staff while demonstrating a high degree of diplomacy and tact.
• Ability to operate medical equipment safely and correctly.
• Knowledge of infection prevention & control standards and practices.
• Flexible, organized and able to function under stressful situations.
• Ability to understand, interpret and apply instructions, guidelines and procedures.
• Culturally sensitive and able to work with ethnically diverse patient populations.
• Ability to prioritize and work on multiple tasks.
• Intermediate experience with computers and information systems.

Responsibilities

• Ensure all reports, tests, results, and labs are available before appointments.
• Escort patients to exam rooms and document vitals and history.
• Review records to determine needed services and referrals.
• Assist physicians during examinations or procedures.
• Provide patients with instructions from physicians or providers.
• Stock exam rooms and prepare instruments for sterilization.
• Provide clerical support: forms, calls, records, lab reports, referrals.
• Maintain infection prevention standards in rooms.
• Administer medications and vaccines as directed.
• Process messages from patients and staff to providers.
• Handle patient calls and messages with care and accuracy.
• Process medication refills per protocol.
• Maintain logs and checks (temp, meds, supplies).
• Perform EKGs and CLIA-waived tests.
• Collect blood samples and other specimens.
• Participate in process improvement activities to enhance patient care and service.
