Description

Performs Echocardiography procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision of technical detail. The technologist may be involved with patients of the physician in any medical setting for which the physician is responsible. It is a requirement of the position that call be taken as assigned, including evening, weekends and holiday call. This position may include rotation of weekend coverage.

The Cardiac Sonographer provides care that is consistent with the following:

  • The ARDMS Ultrasound Practice Standards
  • The Patient’s bill of Rights
  • The ARDMS Code of Ethics
  • The Policies and Procedures set forth by Kishwaukee Community Hospital

Hours/FTE: 72 hours every two weeks (0.9 FTE)

Responsibilities

  • Meet organizational standards of performance and adhere to Values & Standards of Behavior Guidelines.
  • Operate ultrasound equipment with in-depth knowledge, selecting proper transducer frequency for each examination.
  • Document procedures accurately and maintain equipment quality control.
  • Demonstrate a high level of knowledge of anatomy and physiology, recognizing structures and differentiating artifacts from pathology.
  • Handle equipment responsibly and professionally, selecting appropriate technical factors per patient and age-specific criteria.
  • Assist patients in assuming correct positions and recognize diagnostic scans, providing initial interpretations to physicians.
  • Deviate from normal techniques when necessary to complete exams, and recognize abnormal findings.
  • Maintain a safe, positive, and professional environment for patients, communicating effectively to reduce anxiety.
  • Gather and exchange patient information with staff, explain procedures, and monitor patient condition during exams.
  • Perform sterile techniques, emergency exams, and related clerical tasks, maintaining exam room organization and supplies.
  • Keep current with developments in diagnostic echocardiography through education and reading.
  • Participate in performance improvement activities and hospital PI programs.

Qualifications

  • Completion of ARDMS accredited program in Cardiovascular Ultrasound.
  • Experience in Adult and Pediatric Echocardiography, Stress Echos, TEE’s.
  • ARDMS (RDCS) registration or eligibility, and CCI (RCS) within 9 months of employment.
  • Strong communication skills, physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, and ability to exercise judgment in emergencies.
  • Knowledge of abuse/neglect and growth/development across lifespan.

Preferred

  • One year of hospital setting experience.
