Job Description

The Cardiac Center Respiratory Therapist/ECMO Specialist serves in a dual role to:

• Provide routine and emergency respiratory care to patients in the Comprehensive Cardiac Care Unit under physician supervision.
• Offer clinical guidance to respiratory care trainees and educate healthcare professionals.
• Maintain patient safety through continuous monitoring of patients, ECMO circuits, and related technology.
• Identify and resolve issues with ECMO processes, consulting with physicians as needed.
• Collaborate with the ECMO team to deliver personalized patient care, adapting to schedule and shift changes due to ECMO emergencies.

Schedule: 72 hours biweekly, 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.

Essential Functions

Respiratory Therapist:

• Manage mechanical ventilation, airway clearance, and respiratory medications.
• Administer advanced medical gases, including Nitric Oxide and Helium-oxygen mixtures.
• Transport critically ill patients within the hospital.
• Perform point-of-care blood tests such as ABGs.

ECMO Specialist:

• Maintain ECMO competencies through ongoing education and training.
• Adjust ECMO settings to maintain patient parameters.
• Recommend and administer blood products, fluids, and medications based on ECMO status.
• Assess cardiopulmonary status and perform patient assessments to prevent complications.
• Monitor and manage fluid levels and coagulation status, adjusting heparin as per protocol.
• Evaluate imaging for tube placement and lung status, supporting ECMO weaning procedures.
• Participate in research activities and evaluate new equipment.

Qualifications

• Graduate of an accredited Respiratory Care program.
• Associate's degree required; Bachelor's preferred.
• Certification as a Registered or Certified Respiratory Therapist by NBRC or equivalent.
• Active Florida license.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) required; PALS and ACLS within six months of hire.
