Cardiac Center Respiratory Therapist/ECMO Specialist
About
The Cardiac Center Respiratory Therapist/ECMO Specialist serves in a dual role to:
- Provide routine and emergency respiratory care to patients in the Comprehensive Cardiac Care Unit under the guidance of the Cardiac Critical Care attending physician.
- Offer clinical direction for respiratory care trainees and consult with other healthcare professionals.
- Maintain routine contact with patients and their families, and work in other hospital areas as needed based on patient census and acuity.
Ensure appropriate patient care through continuous monitoring of the patient, ECMO circuit, and related technology. Identify and resolve issues related to ECMO processes, and collaborate with the ECMO team and physicians.
Schedule: 72 hours biweekly, 12-hour shifts, including nights and weekends.
Respiratory Therapist Essential Functions:
- Provide mechanical ventilation, airway clearance, and respiratory medication administration.
- Deliver advanced medical gases, perform intra-hospital transport, and conduct point-of-care blood testing.
- Participate in multidisciplinary care rounds.
ECMO Specialist Essential Functions:
- Maintain ECMO competencies with ongoing training and education.
- Monitor and adjust ECMO circuit settings, recommend treatments, and assess patient status through tests and physical exams.
- Manage fluid levels, coagulation, and support ECMO-related research.
- Demonstrate expertise in neonatal and pediatric care, troubleshoot equipment, and evaluate new technologies.
Quality and Documentation:
- Provide clear shift reports, participate in case reviews, and contribute to quality improvement.
- Educate families and document clinical information accurately using Epic.
Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited School for Respiratory Care.
- Associate's degree required; Bachelor's preferred.
- Certified or Registered Respiratory Therapist credential from NBRC or equivalent.
- Active Florida license.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) required; PALS and ACLS within six months of hire.
