Job description

A Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) Technologist, also known as a Cardiovascular Technologist or Cath Lab Tech, plays a vital role in assisting with diagnostic and interventional procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular conditions. Their primary focus is to work closely with cardiologists and other healthcare professionals in the Cath Lab to ensure patient safety, comfort, and the successful execution of procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare patients for cardiac catheterization procedures by explaining the process and answering any questions they may have.
  • Ensure that patients are comfortably positioned on the procedure table and are prepared for the upcoming procedure.
  • Equipment Setup:
  • Set up, calibrate, and ensure the readiness of necessary equipment, including X-ray machines, fluoroscopy equipment, EKG machines, and various other monitoring devices.
  • Ensure all equipment is functional and ready for use throughout the procedure.
  • Assisting the Cardiologist:
  • Assist the interventional cardiologist or radiologist during procedures by handing over instruments, guiding catheters, and providing contrast media as required.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and administer medications when needed to maintain patient stability.
  • Radiation Safety:
  • Follow strict radiation safety protocols to minimize exposure to both the patient and themselves.
  • Ensure the appropriate use of protective lead aprons and radiation shielding during procedures.
  • Record Keeping:
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of each procedure, including patient medical history, medications administered, and any complications or adverse reactions during the procedure.
  • Ensure that all documentation is complete and filed in accordance with hospital protocols.
  • Monitor the patient's condition after the procedure to ensure they remain stable and provide post-procedure care as necessary.
  • Prepare patients for discharge when they are stable and assist with any necessary follow-up instructions.
  • Equipment Maintenance:
  • Regularly clean and maintain Cath Lab equipment to ensure it remains in optimal working condition.
  • Report any equipment malfunctions or issues to the appropriate department for prompt repair.
  • Teamwork:
  • Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team, including nurses, radiologic technologists, and cardiologists or radiologists.
  • Ensure effective communication and teamwork to provide optimal patient care.
  • Quality Assurance:
  • Assist with quality control and assurance processes to ensure the Cath Lab meets regulatory standards and adheres to safety protocols.
  • Participate in ongoing improvement initiatives to maintain high levels of safety and quality.
  • Education and Training:
  • Stay updated with the latest technologies, procedures, and best practices in the field of cardiovascular care.
  • Participate in training and mentoring new technologists to ensure they understand protocols and maintain high standards of care.
Required Qualifications:

Education:

  • Associate’s degree in cardiovascular technology, radiologic technology, or a related field.
  • Certification in Cardiovascular Technology (e.g., RCIS - Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist) is preferred.
Experience:
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in a cath lab or related healthcare environment.
  • Knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and cardiac diagnostic procedures.
License/Certification:
  • Certification from a recognized accrediting body (e.g., ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists, or RCIS - Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist).
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification may be required, depending on the facility.
