Roles and Responsibilities
As Captain, you are responsible for:
* Ensuring crew welfare and training in safety, firefighting, search and rescue.
* Ensuring the safe navigation of the vessel at all times.
* Conducting drills, training, safety meetings, and maintaining records as per company policy.
* Ensuring vessel maintenance and inspection compliance.
* Inspecting the vessel to ensure safety standards and regulations are met.
* Working closely with customers, pilots, and government agencies.
* Reporting equipment failures, incidents, and damages promptly.
* Staying current with maritime laws.
* Supervising crew in safe vessel operation.
* Ensuring crew adherence to laws and policies.
* Evaluating crew performance and taking necessary actions.
* Implementing safety policies and maritime standards.
* Focusing on water depth, weather, traffic, and other navigational factors.
Qualifications:
Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential, STCW, HAZWOPER, PIC (preferred), National Master 200 GT or greater license, Radar Endorsement, MMC, TWIC.
* Valid TWIC and state driver's license.
* Valid U.S. Passport.
* Ability to pass criminal background checks and qualifications for Canada entry.
* High School Diploma or equivalent.
* Eligibility to work in the U.S.
Experience and Skills:
* Minimum 5 years as Master or Operating Mate on towing vessels.
* Marine operations background, familiarity with shipyards and tugs.
* Knowledge of maritime regulations.
* Skilled with appropriate equipment.
Working conditions:
* Lodging and provisions onboard.
* Transportation provided.
* Physical fitness to board tugs and barges, climb ladders, and work in seaway conditions.
* Comfortable with heights and narrow walkways.
* Ability to work 12-hour shifts during the season.
* Exposure to various weather conditions.
* Seasonal position lasting 4-6 months.
