The Capacity Management RN is responsible for all activities related to Capacity Management, including coordinating patient placement, access case management, and patient flow to ensure appropriate, effective, and efficient patient care. The RN is empowered to remove barriers and bottlenecks related to patient placement and flow. They communicate with Nurse Managers, Administrative Supervisors, Physicians, Medical Directors on Call, and the Administrator on Call as needed.

Responsibilities:
  • Uses clinical expertise to coordinate the placement of elective and emergent admissions, as well as transfers from other facilities, ensuring patients are admitted or transferred to the most appropriate available bed.
  • Clinically knowledgeable of disease entities, epidemiological issues, and circumstances affecting patient placement.
  • Implements and communicates the Capacity Management plan for the day as defined at the daily bed meeting to staff, physicians, leadership, and operations departments.
  • Communicates the daily Capacity Management plan to evening staff and Administrative Supervisors to ensure continued focus on the day's plan.
  • Reviews patient conditions as necessary, in collaboration with case management staff, ETC, Administrative Supervisor, or charge nurse, to ensure proper placement.
  • Tracks bed availability, maintaining logs and records.
  • Works directly with Plant Ops and Environmental Services on daily Room of the Day (ROD).
  • Oversees Daily Census Bed Reports three times a day.
  • Conducts rounds on nursing units to identify discharge barriers, build staff relationships, and educate staff about the RN Capacity role.
  • Monitors bed availability and pending discharges across units to meet ADT needs.
  • Acts as a resource for patient placement, guiding staff on unit capabilities and policies regarding patient care and equipment.
  • Recommends to the Director on unit closures or downsizing, and manages patient transfers during overflow situations.
  • Communicates regularly with the Director about divert status, OR holds, or delays, and calls additional bed meetings as needed.
Qualifications:
  • NJ State Professional Registered Nurse License
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited program and three years of experience
  • Knowledge of nursing principles, practices, laws, and regulations
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to apply nursing methods and techniques effectively
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships
  • Master's degree in nursing or related field preferred
  • Previous experience in Capacity Management preferred
